SANTA MONICA, California: Amazon on Thursday unveiled a new, larger version of its Kindle Fire tablet computer with a high-definition display, in a move by the retail giant to take on the market-leading iPad.

The new Kindle Fire HD will be offered with an 8.9-inch (22.6-centimeter) display, along with an upgraded version of the tablet launched in a smaller format last year, Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos told reporters.

"Kindle Fire HD is not only the most-advanced hardware, it's also a service," Bezos said.

"When combined with our enormous content ecosystem, unmatched cross-platform interoperability and standard-setting customer service, we hope people will agree that Kindle Fire HD is the best high-end tablet anywhere, at any price."

The large-display tablet is only 8.8 millimeters thick, and weighs 560 grams (20 ounces).

The Kindle Fire HD has dual-band Wi-Fi and two antennas, he said, comparing it to the rival iPad from Apple and the Google Nexus 7 tablets.

Bezos said the upgraded Wi-Fi specifications and increased processing clout would make it run 41 per cent faster than the latest version of the iPad, launched earlier this year.

Amazon will offer three versions of the tablet.

The Kindle Fire HD 7-inch will cost $199 and ships September 14, while the iPad-challenging larger version, with 16 GB of memory will cost $299 and will go on sale on November 20.

In an even more direct challenge to the iPad, a 4G version of the larger Kindle Fire HD will sell at $499 -- the same price as a basic iPad.

"We're taking on the most popular price point for a tablet, $499, but doubling the storage and incredibly, adding ultra-fast 4G LTE wireless," Bezos said.

Speaking in an airport hangar in Santa Monica, California, he said Amazon kept its prices lower than many competitors because it wants to make money from selling content, rather than from devices themselves.

"We want to make money when they use our devices, not when they buy our devices," he told reporters gathered for a press conference, the subject of which had been a mystery before the event.

Contrary to a rumor which spread on the eve of the Amazon event, there was no announcement of a new Amazon smartphone.

The Kindle Fire HD announcements came after he unveiled a new Kindle e-reader with so-called "paperwhite" display. It will have a battery life of eight weeks with the backlight on, and will ship October 1.

The paperwhite Kindle will retail at $119, while a 3G mobile version will cost $179. A new version of the basic Kindle will be reduced in price from $79 to $69, he said.

Amazon, which launched the Kindle Fire in the US market last year, said last week the first version had captured 22 per cent of the market for tablet computers, although it did not reveal detailed sales data.

Apple's iPad has about two-thirds of the global market for tablets, and the company is expected to introduce a smaller version of it later this year.

But the new device drew some positive comments.

"Is Amazon the New Apple? I think Amazon just stole the tablet market," analyst and consultant Rob Enderle tweeted. He added that for "the key uses of a tablet -- reading, games, movies -- Amazon is now better in all three."

Industry analyst Jeff Kagan said Kindle Fire "is bigger, stronger and better than before and will compete more directly with the big guys on the playing field."

The Kindle Fire "is closer to an Apple iPad, but it still is not an Apple iPad," Kagan said.

Ross Rubin, analyst at Reticle Research, said the new device "stays a bit below Apple's 10 (inch) domain (if not price). But 8.9 (inch) is an appealing size for movies."

Rubin noted however that Amazon did not talk up the notion of apps for the devices.

"Amazon stepping up ecosystem efforts but focus is on own features, services. Third-party apps still seem like an afterthought," he wrote on Twitter.

[h=1]Amazon Kindle Fire HD will set budget tablet market alight[/h] Analysis Amazon's latest tablet will head sales in run up to Christmas
By Lee Bell
Fri Sep 07 2012, 15:32

ONLINE RETAILER Amazon announced on Thursday that its Kindle Fire tablet will finally reach tablet hungry consumers in the UK.
It said it will put its second generation Kindle Fire tablet on sale in the UK for a wallet friendly £129 in October, along with a new and more powerful 7in Kindle Fire HD tablet priced at £159.
kindle-fire-hd-7-540x334.jpg

When it launched in the US last year, Amazon's original Kindle Fire made a good start, managing to shift a lot of units over the holiday season. But due to less impressive hardware specifications, it failed to stand up against Apple's new Ipad when that launched a few months later in February. As a result, many Kindle users were left gasping for a more powerful tablet.
However, this time, it looks like Amazon has ensured that the same thing won't happen in the UK this year and has upped its game, launching a device with much better specifications.
Running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the more powerful 7in Kindle Fire HD will feature an IPS HD 1280x800 resolution display with a polarising filter and an anti-glare finish, a speedy 1.2GHz dual core processor and Dolby Digital Plus audio - all weighing only 395g and running for 11 hours on a single charge. Amazon also promises that it will provide "40 percent faster downloads and streaming compared to the next fastest tablet".
This is nothing but great news for tablet fans who are either in the market to buy a more portable tablet or want a tablet and don't have the funds to splash out over £500 on the high-end models. Filling a narrowing gap in the consumer technology market, the Kindle is bound to sell well in the UK in the run up to Christmas.
However, Amazon isn't alone as there's another major player standing in the retailer's way - Google with its Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 showed the technology world that a low-cost tablet could offer high quality hardware and deliver a great experience, and it seems that Amazon has taken a page out of Google's book when planning its Kindle Fire release.
So far, only Google's Nexus 7 has offered this sort of high performance in a low-priced package in the UK, and we're sure that Amazon's announcement has given Google some concern, as consumers now have to decide which budget tablet they like best out of the two.
Amazon has already started boasting about how its new tablet is better than Google's offering, promising in its announcement on Thursday that the Kindle Fire HD's OMAP 4470 processor will be significantly faster than the Tegra 3 chip found in Google's Nexus 7 tablet and citing floating point operations (per) second (FLOPS) figures as evidence.
It might sound shallow, but simple specifications comparisons such as this just might do the trick and persuade buyers into handing over their cash to Amazon as opposed to Google. Not only that, we think that being the newer offering of the two will definitely work in Amazon's favour.
Whether the second generation Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD will steal sales from Google in the run up to Christmas or not, we think that Amazon's new offerings undoubtedly will set the UK budget tablet market alight.
Alhough Amazon will make hardly any profit from sales of the Kindle tablets themselves - making profits through content sales and the services it offers instead - the Kindle Fire announcement is a warning to other Android tablet makers to up their games and start offering more unique services where they can make profits, so they can bring lower cost tablets to the consumer marketplace.
One more negative point worth making in relation to Amazon's Kindle announcement is that there is no mention of the 8.9in model of the new Kindle Fire HD at Amazon in the UK.
It would be a mistake for the retailer not to bring both models of the new tablet to the UK because at the moment the Nexus 7 is leading the budget tablet market and, if you think about it, there's isn't any other major tablet maker that offers a 8.9in or larger screen at a very tempting price. Amazon could seriously miss out there.
Nevertheless, the release of such high powered but low priced hardware is nothing but good news for British consumers looking to buy a budget tablet. Amazon said orders will be served on a first-come, first-served basis, so we would advise getting your preorders in now, because once October hits, these new Kindle tablets are going to fly off the shelves.

Another failed product, lol

The Kindle is actually quite successful. Apple gets the high end, Kindle (Android) gets the low end, backed by Amazon's content delivery.

It is Microsoft that gets fucked. Microsoft Windows 8 tablets will be collecting dust in stores everywhere. Mark my words.

i have the original fire. my advice is - stay away from it unless you want to read books and magazines only. The video and music ability is horrific.

The only company that can take on Apple is Amazon. Its all about content. You can have the best hardware but without the software, youre screwed. Since Sony is in movie production, Amazon should team up with them to produce movies and sell it only on Amazon when its release on home video and blu ray.

I bought the kindle touch, whose purpose is to read ebooks I buy from amazon, the iPad for productivity, iTouch for music & the iPhone for communications & fast information on the go.

The Kindle has its niche market...iPad will still dominate..& Microsoft once again are 'shooting' themselves on the foot for being too slow to come in to the marketplace. They do have an interesting OS in Windows 8, not that I am found of MS, in fact I hate Windows; but "8" a big departure from what we expect. But then again, under the 'hood'...ahh!! the same 'junk". Once again, the 'dinosaur, looses out, when their product launches in October..Amazon, Apple..and whoever will be out in front, securing the "holiday pie" share!!

Amazon DOES NOT sell ebooks to people who life in Indonesia, Spore, or Malaysia.
Ah so, also the dumb Kobo books. iTunes books also very limited. For e-books, you better off with local Skoob and another (IloveEbooks?). Pricing geared to local pricing, range not bad including néw bestsellers. Kindle maybe, but personally loathe to arm with another gadget. iPad will do the job, minus some nice to have features (in my case)

You sure ? for example, without mentioning the book, it is not that "semi porn" one, but popular, Paperback at Popular Book Store, S$38.00; from iBook store US$11.99 or Amazon Kindle ebook, US$11.99, ilove...com S$28.60 ebook. There were other titles too, they were much expensive than Amazon or iBooks.

I have bought from Apple ibooks & Amazon..don't think will use ilove...unless they are selling specialty books in ebook format etc..like select books selection ( the don't have e books) http://www.selectbooks.com.sg/ I don't mind paying the price for the read!.

I have explored the collection at iBooks & Amazon, of course you can't get many books still, due to the publishers & most of the time, many of them are OOP ( out of print, already).

Just a little example of some authors & titles I search for, books I once had bought but now MISSING, Irvin Shaw "Rich Man, Poor Man", Han Suyin " The Crippled Tree" ( amazon have used paperback) & Yukio Mishima translated books, limited but not all.

What I am saying is, the catalog of books is quite extensive, especially current one..as for older ones, we have to give & take...
