Punggol, Serangoon reservoirs to start operating next year

SINGAPORE'S 16th and 17th reservoirs - Punggol and Serangoon - are slated to start operating in the middle of next year.

Together with Marina Barrage, they will expand Singapore's water-catchment area from half its total land area to two thirds by next year.

The two newest reservoirs were completed last December by damming two rivers, Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon. They now need to be desalted - where salt in the water will be diluted by rainwater and then flushed into the sea - before they can be used.

Natural attractions will be added to attract visitors and educate them about nature. These include the Sengkang Floating Wetland, the Lorong Halus Wetland and the Punggol and Serangoon Park Connectors - all expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Sengkang Floating Wetland in Punggol Reservoir will be filled with "fruity" charms, including "lime" seats, see-through "orange slice" pavements, and a large "mangosteen" pavilion.

At Serangoon Reservoir, the Lorong Halus Wetland is a former landfill which is now teeming with wildlife and dotted with information kiosks.

The two reservoirs will be linked by Punggol Waterway, which will flow through Punggol New Town and be completed by the end of the year.

The waterway will be flanked by amenities that allow the public to enjoy nature's charms, such as the Sunrise Gateway, where visitors can view the sunrise during a stroll.

Separately, a food-and-beverage outlet will be built at MacRitchie Reservoir Park, and improvements will be made to the bandstand and footpaths, said Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim in Parliament yesterday.

Close tap, you seriously believe they would prefer water that drop from the sky to cold hard cash. Najib and gang must be cursing Mahathir for killing this golden goose.

Well, you've got a point there. But I think our government also don't want to have their balls squeezed every time Malaysia not happy with us.

Surprising that residents in North-East (ie Sengkang, Punggol, Hougang, Tampines, Pasir-Ris) do not care.

Unlike Newater, the water that seeps through the landfill goes straight to the reservoir and then to the tap with very minimal treatment.

Unlike Singapore River, there is a much higher chance that the landfill water contains industrial waste, no matter how well they managed the dump in the past.

We may have a new cancer town in North East very soon.
