"The Singapore People's Party (SPP) is making plans to contest in Ang Mo Kio GRC. The team is likely to be led by 23-year-old Alex Tan, a financial adviser."http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1123174/1/.html

I just don't understand!!!###????

Why would any opposition candidate in his right mind want to contest against big shots like the Prime Minister, the Senior Minister and the Minister Mentor?

Would any rational voters prefer to vote for a 23-year old men financial adviser to run the country and get a hold onto the US$225 billion dollar national reserves - notwithstanding his job as a "financial adviser"? I will be in heaven if he can top up the national reserves year after year!!!

People KPKB that a reliably chosen 27-year old candidate is too young and inexperienced to run a constituency even under the tutelage of a Senior Minister! 23 year old man is not "young and inexperience"?

There can be only one explanation : The party wants them to be sacrificial lambs in these very-hard-to-win GRCs.

Are they so subservient as to not reject the Party's strategy in making them the sacrificial lambs? It's slavery !!!

Are they big time gamblers - that the greater the odds and risks, the greater are the winnings? It's suicidal !!!

Are they contesting to make a name for themselves in history or for posterity - that they have fought against the Greats and yet manage to get some freak votes? (It's good for the CVs, you know, for these young people - and especially lawyers - more business!) It's ludicrous !!!

Bottom line 1 : Singapore voters don't be a laughing stock to the world. Even those tribesmen in Congo will be laughing!

Bottom line 2 : Do not throw the bathwater with the baby!

LKY was challenged in 1970s by oppositions who had no chances of winning but just want to contest the mighty PM.

the formation of GRC make contesting the heavyweight ministers, PM, SM very unattractive. it's hard to assemble a team of willing candidates to fight an impossible mission. if our elections only single seats, there will be 23 yrs old financial adviser, 70 yrs old retiree or bicycle thief who will put themselves forward to contest against the likes of PM, SM, MM.

I know Alex Tan's supervisor in Prudential and have spoken to the chap.
Young and inexperience he may be but what he has us the genuine passion to step forward to be counted.

Yes, in the Philippines, you got a long list of candidates to choose from. That's good for democracy - but is it good for good governance?

Bottom line 2 : Do not throw the bathwater with the baby![/B]

1. The phrase is "Do not throw the baby with the bathwater". Who in his right mind would consider keeping the bathwater and throwing the baby?

2. The same phrase has no relevance to your point. :o
