Tunisia: Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali faces 18 criminal charges

Tunisia has drawn up 18 criminal charges, including manslaughter and drug running, against its former president, who triggered a wave of revolutions across the Middle East by fleeing into exile.
Tunisian authorities have arrested a brother of toppled president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, a source in the interior ministry said on Monday.

Charges against President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisian courts on a variety of activities that resulted from abuse of office are to be laid before local courts. Mr Ben Ali fled with his wife and a large entourage of his wealthy clan to Saudi Arabia in January.

Lazhar Chebbi, the Justice Minister in the caretaker government, said officials were exploring legal ways to extradite Mr Ben Ali from Saudi Arabia to face trial. He said: “The accusations include murder, conspiracy against the security of the state as well as trafficking and the use of drugs.”

Tunisia announced on January 26 that it had asked Interpol to help arrest Mr Ben Ali, his wife Leila Trabelsi and other members of the family.

The interim authorities appointed a new government to oversee a transition to democracy and disbanded the state security apparatus, notorious for human rights abuses under Mr Ben Ali’s 23-year regime.

While Mr Ben Ali is safe from the charges under the protection of the Saudi king, he will never be able to travel freely. Other dictators face retribution after being dislodged by the Arab Spring movements that copied the Tunisia revolution.

Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak was yesterday under arrest in a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he receiving treatment after a heart attack.

His two sons, Gamal and Alaa, have been detained at Torah prison along with dozens of presidential aides, ex-ministers, former party officials and executives.

Ben Ali faces 18 charges in Tunisia

(AFP) – 18 hours ago

TUNIS — Tunisian prosecutors want to try toppled president Zine el Abidine Ben Ali on 18 different charges, including murder and drug-trafficking, according to the country's justice minister.

"The accusations include murder, conspiracy against the security of the state as well as trafficking and the use of drugs," Lazhar Karoui Chebbi said in an interview with national television late Wednesday.

It is the first time that authorities have given a full tally of the charges that Ben Ali will face if he is extradited to the country that he ruled with an iron fist for 23 years.

The government had previously confirmed that he was wanted for murder and incitement.

Ben Ali has been accused of ordering security forces to crack down on about a month of protests that led to his ouster during which around 200 people were killed, according to UN figures.

Chebbi said Tunisia's transitional government was compiling a file to support its demand for the extradition of the former president, who fled to Saudi Arabia with his family on January 14.

The Tunisian justice system issued an international arrest warrant for Ben Ali and his second wife Leila Trabelsi on January 26. World police agency Interpol also issued a global alert for them.

A justice ministry delegation will go to the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France, to try to accelerate the process of executing the arrest warrants, the minister said.

Officials had also met with delegations from Canada, Switzerland and the United States, which were involved either because members of the Ben Ali family were on their soil or over fraudulently obtained goods.

Tunisia has already asked Ottawa to extradite and freeze the accounts of Ben Ali's wealthy brother-in-law Belhassen Trabelsi, who reportedly flew on a private jet to Montreal on January 20 with his wife and children.

Tunisian authorities have arrested 33 members of Ben Ali's family on suspicion of plundering the nation's resources.
