all of us have rights to our beliefs...unfortunately the nature of politics is about power and the desire for absolute power is strong in human nature...because along with the power, there comes material wealth

but politics has another side - that of building a good nation, one that benefits not only themselves but the voters too

so what is your political philosophy? care to share?

i reckoned i'm more of a libertarian.

i believe in free play from all common folks for the common good of all. no doubt there would be chances of the place being slightly chaotic, but i always see that there would be a certain order amidst the chaos.

in short, there would be minimal laws to curtail certain undesirable actions, and stop telling me to stop chewing gums.

Imagine there is no politics, no crave for power
Imagine everyone care the one next to him/her not himself or herself first
Imagine every one gets to eat and live together in peace and harmony
Imagine everyone shares and care when one is sick
Imagine there is no gahmen, and I am not talking about anarchy
Imagine there is no rich or poor, just u and me
Imagine everyone dun need to use $

Possible?? I would think yes

Not in our life time anyway

But I can't imagine no air conditioning in Singapore:eek:, si beh hot here

You know this isn't possible? As long as there's limited resources and more people craving for them, they'll start looking for laws and people who can enforce these laws. Then they'll think about how to choose these leaders who will enforce the laws.

I'm a liberal socialist. There must be all the fundamental human rights, but the govt is also obliged to take care of those who fall and the worst off. I believe the people are the true owners of any country, and govt is only APPOINTED to run things for them and serve them.

Where do you stand on the political spectrum? Left wing, right wing, conservative, liberal, tree hugger nut case?

Take this test to find out.

thank you for the test...

for what it is worth, my results show economic left/right = -2.88 and social libertarian/authoritarian = 0.51

i guess this means i feel that the state should be more involved in people's wellbeing and at the same time, believing that in some parts, people should be free to do what they want and in other parts, their freedom should be curtailed for the benefit of society as a whole

in the test you recommended, it was shown amongst political leaders, a lot of them are authoritarian, only one (Gandhi) believes more in the freedom of the individual than the authority of the state...Gandhi was also more left-wing in his approach....if a Gandhi-equivalent ever stands for election in this state, I will surely vote for him. (To avoid misunderstanding, although some people compared CSJ to be Gandhi-like, that is not an opinion that i shared.)

this is in line with my own profile and philosophy and represents a political belief which i feel will do the most good for the most people for the longest time without corruption coming in.

My political philosophy is:
-- people who form the government should have an altruistic nature and not do it for money.
-- the poor, disabled, elderly and needy should be taken care of, regardless of the cost to the country or government.
-- economic growth and advancement is of utmost importance, but the welfare of citizens is just as important if not more.
-- capitalisation and meritocracy are key principles, but the rich should always help the poor.
-- just like a corporate culture and values are developed, a country needs to have a country culture, values and principles.

This sounded to me like democratic socialism. When singapore was starting out, it was decided that communism was not the way to go. There should be democracy and yet there should also be socialism.

So political and economic objectives in Singapore have social goals.

The result we all know: fast economic growth, high earnings and a fairly iron rice bowl.

But that was the start.

...

Today the singapore is very different.

Speaking from my point of view as one citizen: singapore starts idealistically, fulfills the expectations of most....tried to redefine herself...decided to do business abroad...functions more like a company....further redefine herself to be a haven for the rich and talented. Today newspaper reports say that the Health Minister does not rule out organ trading. If so, we will be the first democratic country to engage in organ trading. Who benefits? The rich. Singapore is to a rich man's paradise where they pay no estate duties and can buy organs and do transplants?

Thus from democratic socialism into Monte Carlo?

I hate socialism. It rewards the undeserving and punishes hard work.

but capitalism sees only the value of money and not the needs of men/women

democratic socialism is different - it rewards the hardworking and at the same time provide a safety net for the most vulnerable in our society (those old folks who were admitted to hospitals and their children practically disappeared; those who go through misfortune and can no longer fend for themselves...)
