M'sia's Anwar braces for 'massive' vote-rigging

PENANG - MALAYSIAN opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said on Sunday he was bracing for 'massive' vote-rigging by the government to block him from winning a key by-election, which could propel him back to power.

Mr Anwar launched his election campaign in his home state, despite the looming threat of arrest on sodomy allegations - which he has insisted are a political smear.

A crowd of some 5,000 people gathered on Sunday in an open area in Seberang Jaya in northern Penang state to hear Anwar speak.

The former deputy premier, who was jailed on sodomy charges a decade ago, got the chance to run for parliament in a special by-election when his wife announced last week she was giving up her seat in her Permatang Pauh constituency.

'I am sad to leave my constituency after ten years ... but it is for the greater good of this country when Anwar steps into parliament,' Ms Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told the crowd, who thrust their fists in the air and shouted the opposition battle-cry of 'Reformasi' or 'Reform' as Mr Anwar walked onto a stage.

'We look forward to the election as we need to get the message to the government that we need a new leader,' said 38-year-old Helmi Faizal, an opposition supporter.

Earlier, Mr Anwar told reporters he was prepared to fight any tactics the ruling Barisan Nasional government coalition might use to thwart his bid in the upcoming by-election.

'If Umno-Barisan Nasional decide to (play) rough with massive funding and bribery, then we will have to be really prepared,' he said, referring to the powerful ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).

He said under 'normal conditions' it would be easy to retain the seat, which was held by his wife - the official leader of his Keadilan party.

'How rough they want to play and how is the Election Commission going to conduct the elections, these issues we are going to study,' he said. 'We are not taking it for granted.'

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has said the government will not prevent Mr Anwar from seeking the seat, but authorities will investigate the sodomy allegations against him.

Keadilan officials have said Mr Anwar could face imminent arrest on charges he sodomised a 23-year-old aide, Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

'It is not a question of facts and law. The arrest (will be) a political decision,' Mr Anwar said.

He has repeatedly rejected the sex claims and called his accuser an 'outright liar' who was working with others in power to frame him and block his plans to topple the government.

Mr Anwar was jailed 10 years ago on the same sex charges before they were overturned. He was also imprisoned for corruption. -- AFP

1]How is it you are able to tell which is the guilty party ?
2]And what makes you think Anwar did not stage this sodomy affair to gain public support ?

It is quite obvious who is not the guilty party with a sloppy job in planning this strategy. So many loose ends and loop holes for people to poke at. Is Anwar NOT guilty? He might and he might not, but he creates enough circumstantial evidence to convince people that he is not guilty.

leak news of stupid Najib meeting with Saiful ( probably its Najib and not Anwar since he is an Ass Man himself ), leak document on medical report and polis not able to produce Saiful's report and evidence to indicate Anwar's prick inside Saiful's arse.

Saiful only indicated to the doctor that he was penetrated by a plastic object. That does not constitute to Sodomy. My choicce would be he has no knowledge what exactly is Sodomy or anal sex at all. In fact I question if he actually has sexual knowledge or experience to know what is Sodomee.

It does not really bother me if Anwar is an ass man, if he is probably the first thing he will do when become the premier would be Gay liberalization. Hey! Malaysia will be more liberal than Singapore by then.

Very true that nobody knows whether these allegations are true or not ....
With regards to vote buying ... it is very unlikely ... with so many in question, all you need is a couple of hundreds of Anwar supporter to get the proof and there goes the UMNO govt or ruling party ... especially when the whole wide world is looking closely at the political situation there now ....

I doubt that they need vote buying. They simply lock him up and disqualify him. By then this will be a non-contest area and Umno just take the seat up.
