Special report: 2008 Olympic Games

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Singaporean women's table tennis team aims to reach top four at the Beijing Olympic Games, head coach Liu Guodong said here Saturday.

After arriving at the Athletes' Village Saturday afternoon, the usually low-key Liu claimed that his charges may reach the final given great form, and they have the chance for a medal if the squad "uses 70 percent of its talent."

Liu, elder brother of Chinese men's head coach Liu Guoliang, doesn't see China as an archrival simply because there is a vast gap between the two countries.

"We aim at the top four," said Liu. "We see the South Korean, Hong Kong and U.S. teams as our major rivals."

Spearheaded by Beijing-born Li Jiawei, Singapore also has 7th-ranked Wang Yuegu and No. 9 Feng Tianwei.

Speaking of world No. 6 ranked Li, Liu said that pressure has been mounting after Li whitewashed Chinese teen prodigy Guo Yue 3-0in last year's world table tennis championships.

Guo, 2007 world singles champion, broke into tears following the unexpected defeat.

Born in 1981, Li won the hearts of the city state when she finished fourth at the Athens Olympics after edging China's second-seeded Wang Nan in the quarter-finals.

"Guo was not at her best at that time, " Liu said.

Li, who looked tired after getting off the bus, didn't answer the reporter's question. Li has been named the flag-bearer at the Aug. 8 opening ceremony.

China is widely expected to sweep all the four table tennis gold medals in Beijing.

The Chinese women's team will be led by Zhang Yining, 2004 Olympic singles and doubles winner, world champion Guo Yue and veteran Wang Nan, a "grand slam" winner of Olympic, world championship and World Cup titles.
