Singaporean gets six weeks' jail for trespassing Pedra Branca

SINGAPORE: A 39-year-old Singaporean has been sentenced to six weeks in jail for trespassing on the island of Pedra Branca. He is believed to be the first person to be prosecuted for illegally entering the island.

In his mitigation plea, Lee Roger said getting to Pedra Branca was his chance to return to Singapore as he had been cheated by a friend of his money and identification papers when he was on the Indonesian island of Batam ten years ago.

Unable to leave Indonesia, he eventually settled down in Tanjung Uban, Bintan, got married and even had a son. But things fell apart and he wanted to return to Singapore.

With the equivalent of only about S$13 in Indonesian rupiah, he hired a motorised sampan to take him to Pedra Branca on February 5 this year.

Roger had heard fishermen speak of being rescued by Singapore patrol boats when they were lost at sea. He, instead, ended up being arrested when he set foot on the island.

He was charged with entering Singapore illegally via an unauthorised landing point. Another charge of being in a protected place without a permit was also taken into consideration during sentencing.

Roger's defence lawyer, Patrick Tan, said: "He had hoped for a fine, but court has sentenced him to six weeks' imprisonment. Of course, he's not happy but he's prepared to accept and serve his sentence with dignity."

Throughout the session, Roger was calm and his face was impassive even as the judgement was passed. He is now out on a S$10,000 bail.

The judge has granted him time to settle personal matters and to take two tests, which Roger said he needs to undergo to become a qualified optician. He must, thereafter, appear in court on November 21 for the start of his sentence.

Can't find any reasons for mitigation in this case. He wants to come back, he could have asked someone to convey his plight to the Singapore authorities. Landing on a protected installation is asking for it. Precedent has to be set in case someone who is not satisfied choose to test our waters so to speak.

he should know better than to try to challenge it.
this is not the right way to show his patrotism.
our neighbour is still trying to search and look for old documents to appeal to IWC about the ruling.

sorry, just read about the story in the newspaper.
he is actually quite smart, since he lost all his documents - identity card and passport, this way he will be escorted back to Singapore and can apply & make another new identity card and passport.
but maybe he did not lost it but sold them as he went to Batam/Bintang to gamble.

frankly, why would a true blue singaporean with no ill-intent whatsoever but to seek acceptance back in singapore mainland were to be jailed instead??

he probably thought that since pedra branca is the land of singapore, he would safely be there as a citizen. i bet he never thought he would land himself in jail just for his unwanted presence on the island.

let's say you as a singaporean, born and bred here, served your national service, did your reservist, one fine day went out boating or fishing, happened to kenna chased by pirates or some stormy mishaps, landed in pedra branca. would you still be jailed for trespassing??

yeh, trespassing on the land which you did national service to protect its sovereignty?! this i cannot comprehend.

Why never report to the local police when he was cheated 10 years ago and decide to screw around with Indo gal.

Now got problem all kind of sad story come out. If i was the judge i would sentence him as follows:

1) 6 weeks for tresspass

2) 5 years for stupidity with no chance of remission.

He can practice optimitry at Changi Prison.
