A man attempted suicide at Keat Hong LRT Station on Monday evening, causing the train service to be disrupted.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the incident happened at 6.57pm.

He suffered abrasion on his arm and legs and was sent to the National University Hospital.

44 year old Mohammad Effandy Warma, who was at the scene, said: “There’s a lot of activities… the civil defense officers were there, there were two fire engines and I also saw that there were ambulances plus the police.

“We saw… the stretcher and then they pushed it into the ambulance, and then the ambulance goes off. We also saw that the LRT, the carriages were apparently not moving.”

Normal LRT service resumed after more than an hour.

SMRT said about 860 commuters were affected by the disruption. It deployed bus bridging services to serve these passengers.

Those who were unable to complete their journey can get a refund at SMRT’s stations over the next three days.

Since the victim is still alive, he can be charged in court for one count of suicide attempt and another count for disrupting train service and causing inconvenience to commuters.

The reason for the attempt of suicide is still unknown, probably because the victim owed debts or suffered huge losses in casinos like previous reports of similar suicide cases.

The identity of the victim has not been revealed.

I was afraid train would snap off my hand
Man falls onto LRT track but escapes death by squeezing under platform

By Benson Ang
May 14, 2010

On his way home after meeting a friend, Mr Ng Soon Huat suddenly felt faint while standing on the platform at the Keat Hong LRT station.

He lost his balance and fell onto the LRT tracks, after his vision blurred. Seeing a train headed straight for him, he panicked and tried to climb back up to the platform, but could not.

To save himself, he pressed his body against the wall underneath the platform. Personnel from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived to find one of Mr Ng's hands trapped between the train and the platform. The rest of his body was trapped under the platform, and he could not get out.

The SCDF personnel spent 10 minutes using rescue tools to extricate Mr Ng. There were cuts on the back of his neck. His right hand was swollen and there were also abrasions on his right leg.

Mr Ng was taken by ambulance to the National University Hospital, where he received three stitches on his neck. He spent a night in hospital for observation, but was discharged on Tuesday afternoon.

What a loser. The charge should be heavy to prevent him and other people from doing such a stupid and foolish thing.

Anyway I also told an acquaintance this, and he jokingly said he should try a second time. And I laughingly agreed, noting he should finish what he had set out to do.
