Hi all friends,

A few years back, I had worked in norfolk for a short period and had to be back to singapore due to some reasons and now I am contemplating going back there again (if I am accepted in again).

As I had only been there for around 4 months, there are still a lot of things I am unsure on.

I have seen a lot of topics on the united states, australia, china, canada and new zealand but could anyone who are currently living in united kingdom share with us on the life there?

United kingdom is now on the verge of financial collapse and it is officially the sickman of Europe. Why emigrate to a bigger shithole? Worse is that despite the disaster facing UK, the british are still one of the most racist toward Asian people.

In your opinion, which destination presents the less racism towards yellow skin?

Least racism amongst Ang Moh countries is the USA where the President himself is a minority. The largest number of Chinese are in the West Coast & East Coast. The Midwest & Florida have less Chinese. FYI, the drivers in the Midwest & Florida are much more gracious than those in California & New York.

Avoid the Deep South like Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas where racism is the most blatant in the country & where the word redneck originates.

Are you sure you wanna migrate to the UK where the VAT will increase to 17.5% on 1 Jan 2010. And the country keeps on raining.

I have residency in the UK but I've never lived there for more than a few months at a stretch and I'm always happy to leave.

The UK has its beautiful areas where life can be very pleasant and there are places which are absolute shit.

However, one overriding factor is the weather. You have to be the sort that loves the cold, the wet and the dark in order to flourish anywhere on the British Isles.

You gotta be kidding, they are trying their bestest to get the hell outta that shithole. Look at Oz, Canada or NZ. Lots of them in Penang too - they cash out when the Property Market is good and retire. Dont fall into the fire from the frying pan.

Have to disgree. Barclays has come out stronger than ever and it will continue to be the financial centre of the world. Its probabaly the best balanced city in the world in terms of art, education, business etc. There are so many things that it will cater for everyone.

Poeple from all over Europe are making their way there.

The weather sucks, the beaches are shingles etc. Its not a place to retire unless you like the rural and quite life. But if you are into business and finance and yet dabble into food, arts, and culture, cannot be beat.

In 2004, I was walking along Princess Street in Edinburg which is the main street and suddenly heard a wailing Police car coming. It stopped in front of a major dept store and the coppers rushed out the car and into the store.

It was busy street but I was flabbergasted as the driver of the Police car was a chio chinese girl. A few minutes later, the 2 of them dragged out an abusive middle aged idiot who was kicking scream in handcuffs.

The Chinese Police Officer was good looking aged in her mid 20s. And she was very comfortable doing her stuff.

Right then and there I realised that there were more integration in the UK than any where else. They have asians and africans holding very senior posts in the civil service and in industry.

In all my years of travel there, have not encountered anything close to racism. I am sure like everywhere else it exist.

Let be fair. Migration from UK to Canada, US and Oz takes place because, after selling their property, they are loaded with cash. London had such a long run on its property that many people made a fortune.

They also probably left because of the weather.

If you got a Master post grad from British U, no problem to migrate. If not get a job and the employer will apply VISA for you. Many British firms have operations and busineses around the world especially in the commonwealth. Singaporeans generally have a better shot amongst the 2rd world countries. If are into finance, IT etc, its a good place. Apply to an MNC as world wide reach provides an appropriate grounds for VISAs to be approved.

In general, middle income & poor Asians face more discrimination in Asia than in the USA. Most Asian countries are dominated by the political/business elites (AKA the ruling class) & their cronies. Most high management positions in large companies in Asia are held by the Ang Mohs if they are not being held by the elites & their cronies.

Illegal aliens in America can get credit cards & State driver's licenses. They can also get mortgages to buy & own freehold properties. They can claim gov't benefits too. They can also legally buy & own firearms! This is called equal rights & opportunities for all under law!

Ever wonder why so many Asians want to migrate to America?

The VAT has always been 17.5%, just that it has taken a holiday when UK was booming under the weight of leveraging due to financial deregulation.

But the VAT for fuel is around Singapore's GST level.

Yes, the British weather sucks. It cannot decide whether to rain or not. I really hated the sleet when I lived there. Also the people in Northern England ain't prepared for snow, it took them ages to salt the road.

Bloody poms, with their steak and kidney pies.

My awareness on politics is not high but certainly felt that I've a repression against the way singapore is being ruled right now. I understand that I've no power to wrestle against them on issues such as job rights, housing and transportation cost, etc, and not to mention the high debt that had saddled many middle classes, so the only thing I can do is to leave quietly.

Dear friends who had left the country, please pardon my ignorance, what is the most compelling reason that made you left singapore?

Is the because of the one party system in singapore that blatantly creates new laws to favor themselves?

Or is the unreasonable rising cost of living in singapore especially towards public housing and transportation?

Or is it the boorish, snobbish yet desperate own singaporeans that made you guys feel sick of seeing them everyday?

And which place have you guys settled down happily for many years?

Yes, there are good laws and bad laws.. IMHO, good laws are well-balanced and supported by the ppl. Bad laws : 5 in a group considered illegal assembly.. is a load of crap !

Or is the unreasonable rising cost of living in singapore especially towards public housing and transportation?
Well, I think the govt did well on transportation.. as for public housing, I think they should be an Authority to set policies only, such as monetary assistance/offers, definitely not into development to make money... then claimed HDB is heavily subsidies ??!@@#$%. pui !

Or is it the boorish, snobbish yet desperate own singaporeans that made you guys feel sick of seeing them everyday?
Nothing beats kampong frz..

And which place have you guys settled down happily for many years?
In Bris for 3 yrs and Mel for 2 yrs.. loving Melbourne every moment !

I ask people here, how would they feel if Stephen Harper (Ca PM) is the Prime Minister, his father is in the background holding on to power and this wife is controlling the National Investment Agency. When my sons, serves their National Service are they protecting the country or one family? - I think you know the answer.

Canada is not cheap but it is the opportunity available that gives us and our kids a great life.

Or is it the boorish, snobbish yet desperate own singaporeans that made you guys feel sick of seeing them everyday?

Every society will have this type of people, for instance, we been here for 3 years, we dont show off. Wifey is a filipina, whenever, the more "old bird" filipino that are canadian. Will try to "advise" us - for instance asking my wife & me to look for a job instead of running a business as business is "risky". After a while, when they found out how will we are doing, it shut them up.

And which place have you guys settled down happily for many years?

Edmonton 3.5 years - waiting for Ca citizenship, 1st year is the most challenging. So before we landed, we made a pact no to blame each other for the decision instead we should focus on handling external challenges

Please see above

if you ask these questions, it's well understood that you're a loser in analysis-paralysis mode and can't think outside of the box and get your butt going. doers don't ask. they just do it, from intuition and a well prepared mind. sinkapoor is just full of rabid talkers who take zero risk.

i'm cumming over soon to hire, and they won't be useless cocktalkers or whining cowards. they need to show me they can take a problem and run with it, not ask me a book of questions.

Thanks for the phrase on analysis paralysis which I learnt something, but immgration is a big task and having the attitude of just doing it is someone to me with high risk and disregard for the outcome. There are certain things which are once done and simply irreversible and I believe immgration is one of it.

From what I have learnt on the phrase, under software development, it's possible to just do it instead of all the red tape to document down everything before doing anything. I am into application architecture and I understand where you are coming from.

I am glad I took the leap forward a few years back on my trip to norfolk and as I get older, I need to weigh the opportunity cost and the various choices I can make before arriving to a decision.

He is right. Thats what most people get stuck with.

Keep the analysis on where and when rather than should you emmigrate. Its a no brainer moving to a 1st world country. Time is also of the essence. To save time, you should put in apps for the usual list of countries and then make a choice. In the meantime, you can narrow your search.

People who remain with valid reasons tend to be those who have parents who do not wish to leave and are dependent etc.

Why would anyone want to "reverse" a migratory process?

If you've made up your mind to move, it's obvious you are not happy with your current lot so going back when your initial move doesn't tickle your fancy isn't going to make you any happier.

If you move the UK and you find it doesn't suit you, securing a UK passport will open up the whole EC. You can then give Spain, Portugal, Monte Carlo, France etc a go. There are many beautiful places in Europe I would be most happy to call home.
