Paralympics: Singapore wins first-ever medal through Equestrian
By Ryan Huang, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 September 2008 2021 hrs

SINGAPORE : Singapore's Laurentia Tan has won a bronze medal in an Equestrian event on Tuesday, giving the country its first-ever medal at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

Tan, who rode on horse "Nothing To Lose", took third placing in the Individual Championship Test Grade 1A event. Britain's Anne Dunham and S Christiansen took the gold and silver respectively.

Tan will be the first to receive the Athletes Achievement Award (AAA) set up by the Singapore National Paralympic Council. The award comprises a monetary reward of S$25,000 for her bronze medal in the individual event.

The AAA incentives of S$100,000, S$50,000 and S$25,000 are respectively for gold, silver and bronze medal placings at the Paralympic Games individual events.

In swimming, Singapore's Theresa Goh clocked 3 mins 14.22 secs to settle for fourth placing in the 200-metre freestyle event.

She had also come in fourth in the overall heats in the morning.

Singapore sailors Jovin Tan and Desiree Lim are in eighth place so far in the Two-Person Keelboat (SKUD18) event.

They have completed five races so far, with six more to go before the event wraps up on September 13. - CNA /ls

BEIJING: The Paralympics was rocked by its first drugs scandal on Tuesday but "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius quickly created headlines for the right reasons with a thrilling 100m victory on the track.

As China established a narrow lead at the top of the medals table, the South African star edged Jerome Singleton from the US by just 0.03secs after a sluggish start to take gold.

Pistorius crossed the line in 11.17secs in front of a near-full house at the "Bird's Nest" National Stadium on a wet night.

Brian Frasure of the United States took the bronze but the much-anticipated showdown with Marlon Shirley failed to materialise as the American collapsed two-thirds into the race.

"It's unbelievable. The 100 metres was something I was definitely a bit worried about," said Pistorius, adding that he had had to fight hard after his slow start on the wet track.

"I was just so happy. After the first 30 metres I thought 'well the first 30 is done, it's behind me, I've messed it up and now I can focus on the rest of the race,'" added Pistorius, who will now look to the 200m and 400m.

The 21-year-old is the world record holder in his category in all three sprint events he is competing in at the Paralympics.

Nicknamed after the carbon fibre blades he wears, Pistorius staged a high-profile quest to qualify for the Olympics in the 400m event, but eventually fell short.

Nevertheless, he is aiming to compete against the able-bodied elite in the London 2012 Games.

Earlier on Tuesday, a shadow was cast over the Games when it was revealed that Pakistani powerlifter Naveed Ahmed Butt, 37, had been given a two-year ban for steroid use.

In the first drugs scandal of the Paralympics, he tested positive for the steroid methandienone metabolites on September 4, two days before the opening ceremony, the International Paralympic Committee said.

"In accordance with the IPC anti-doping code, and after a hearing of the IPC anti-doping committee, the IPC ratified the decision to disqualify Butt," the committee said in a statement.

A total of 356 tests have been carried out at the Games, both in and out of competition, according to IPC figures until the end of Monday.

At the Athens Games in 2004, 680 doping tests were conducted, resulting in 10 anti-doping rule violations, according to the IPC.

In another controversy, officials on Tuesday ordered the previous day's women's 5,000 metres wheelchair race to be repeated even though the medal ceremony had already been held.

The race saw a huge pile-up less than 100 metres from the finishing line, taking six athletes out of the race.

Only five athletes completed the race and a jury of appeal studied the video footage and decided the race should be repeated on Friday.

After the day's events were completed, China was top on 16 golds, ahead of Britain on 14. China had a total of 53 medals, compared with Britain's 32.

More than 4,000 competitors from nearly 150 countries and regions are battling for 472 gold medals in 20 sports at the eye-catching venues used for the Olympics such as the "Bird's Nest" and the Water Cube.

The sports at the Paralympics, which end on September 17, include athletics, swimming, powerlifting, wheelchair fencing and five-a-side and seven-a-side football, as well as the lesser-known goalball and boccia.

China, eager to showcase the progress it has made in catering for the disabled, has adopted the motto "Two Games with Equal Splendour" for the Games, comparing them with the Olympics. - AFP/de

even paralympics also have drug abuse.

Equestrian? I don't think she could have won bronze had she been raised and trained in Singapore. She was raised and trained in Britain, who won gold and silver in her event. Rings a bell? Sorry for the scepticism, but had it been a man liable for NS, I won't surprised if the person would be representing Britain instead of Singapore. But of course, there's no NS for paralympians, whether men or women.

Anyway, now Singapore has talent import and talent export Olympic (or Paralympic) medalist. No wonder Singapore's one the world's largest (if not the largest) ports.

nothing against the ex sinkies gal who won the medal - way to go gal

just i dun understand Equestrian

it is the horse that are doing all the work, but the rider get the medal

it is like sinkies doing all the work, but pap elite get the money

if she live in singapore, she would need rich parent to learn to ride a horse at young age. basically, if she is 100% sinkies, she will get no medal.
simple as ABC. So PAP media dun want to write too much about it.

Mexico's Patricia Valle beats her in 57.05 to the GOLD.

SINGAPORE'S Yip Pin Xiu comes in second in 57.43.
if she had swam her best during the final, she would have won the GOLD.

her new world paralympic record of 57.04 sets in the Semi-Final is still intact.

Well Done ! Yip ! Hooray For Singapore !!!

So is she a local or foreign talent ?
Can someone confirm it ?

so now no one will said that we depend on a FT to win us medals.
she is one of our very own local born.
Yip Pin Xiu,Singapore is very proud of you.

why the prize/award for these athletes is much much lower than that of an Olympic ???
they should be getting even more, consider that how much harder and time that they must go through.

Yip came in first in the Women's 50-metre Backstroke (S3) Heats with a record time of 57.92 seconds.

The timing put her way ahead of Britain's Fran Williamson, who was second with a time of one minute 06.75 seconds.

Yip on Saturday clinched Singapore's first silver at the Beijing Paralympics, in the Women's 50-metre freestyle finals.
