Hi ArtIsEverywhere,
Yes, the orang Laut and orang Aslis. The land and properties we have bought are for foreigners only and foreigner gazetted land/international lots. This was one of my considerations as well.
I would not touch anything linked with the Dxxxx guys due to bad experiences my neighbours had. I would not touch bumi or land set aside for them either as they deserve much more. I understand some big developers had bought up lots of land around the exterior of Taman Laguna area and one notorious developer even wanted to buy out the Taman Laguna guys with loads of cash if they would evict the locals living outside there. To the credit of the Laguna bosses, they refused. Sometimes money isn't everything.

Despite the popular discussion about properties in johor please take time and stop to think of these folks who sacrifice their land for the development of johor.
The Plight of Orang Laut....near danga bay development. Orang Laut is the Abroginal people of johor. Visited the place myself it's near perling. Very sad to see a big constrast where one one side is the poor orang laut and the other side is the rich bangalows.

I like his Nike sports wear... i cannot afford one :(
Sarcasm aside... these are the real bumiputras. Don't understand why the govt cannot give them some land given the abundance of land in the country. Maybe it is because they are Christians.

I second that too... but the entrance from lima kedai side is pretty hazardous for Nusa Sentral (i suppose eventually the proper entrance will be from the Nusa Idaman side)... Nusa Duta and Nusa Idaman is good as it is already established and populated

Bro Wuqi,
Thks for yr pointers. The 42x90 semi-d at Casa Almyra have a nice layout, that's why I was attracted.
Nusa Duta, haven't seen yet. Only saw the web pics. Semi-ds going abt 800k now.
Nusa Idaman, saw a thread on various issues buyers facing with developer, UEM. In the midst of getting resolved.
Mont Callista - nice houses but a little off the central hub at Nusajaya.
You are right abt HH, location is good. But the semi-ds there are going through the roof beyond my affordability. Anyway, if anyone hears of neighbors looking to sell at reasonable prices, do pm me (semi-d or clusters, not keen on terraces as I don't like the backlane that all terraces have). In meanwhile, will continue my shopping around hoping to land a decent deal.
BTW, I think those who have taken the move there, you made a right choice. For those who are faced with challenges, look towards the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It looks like things can only get worse here with no solution in sight to the never ending structural problems permeating our society given the stretched infrastructure, deluge of foreigners, displacement of locals (jobs, properties, & what have you) and the ever escalating cost of living.
Such are the rewards for studying hard, living honestly, working earnestly and giving 2.5 years of prime youth time (plus yearly monthly stints for reservist) to defend the country. For the next generation, not sure what else is left to defend for except a major "politicommerce"-institution called Singapore Inc doling out growth bonuses and national shares, but retaining our hard earned CPF money thru very ingenious means.

btw... saw my dad reading chinese newspaper earlier... it seems with immediate effect all foreigners entering MY will only have to do finger printing once, they stick a barcoded sticker on your passport... the next time you come in they just need to scan the barcode... anyone experienced this already?
I just got thumb printed a second time last night. Seems like communication is not working well on their party.

AP,
As much as i dislike the MY immigration officers, i always feel a little skeptical when i read news like this. Furthermore it is really lacking in common sense to get into a country without getting your passport stamped. But yes, it gets risky when you are at their mercy. I would never let my partner cross the border on her own.
Then what about mac? Those that they let in without even scanning? Can get into trouble if found out or not?

May I also add that I am generally impressed by the behavior of Malaysians. They are far more street smart than us and also more courteous and personable. It will be good for the children growing up. I find SG kids to be sadly lacking on this front and it shows very clearly during work. You might get your foot in the door but the lack of EQ and social graces quickly earn you a kick out of the same door.
Do you not find Malaysians to be wonderful sales people? They are great at convincing uncles and aunties into purchasing unneeded items. I think that element of kumpung spirit is a tremendous edge to have. There are highly educated Malaysians working in Singapore but i think they still retain a good amount of that same spirit. It makes them a pleasure to work with.

Yes I noticed the waste treatment but it seems ok. Like a super large sump of some sort. Its nearer to the Perling houses and no odor problem. I guess will need to check out few more times if I am really keen.
Bro Wuqi reported that the developer shortchanged the facilities that were originally supposed to be built, but taken at what it is now, seems reasonably ok.
HH pricing has gone thru the roof comparatively speaking. So now looking at Nusa Duta & Mont Callista too. HH seems overpriced by a significant amount in my opinion.
Hmm other than the waste treatment pond, the price and other things are fine to me too...for me as a worrier (not warrior unfortunately), i'll be worried of pollution from any leakage of waste water, not now as the pond is new i heard but if not properly maintained some years down the road...the pond is pretty near to the house i viewed, can see from the bedroom balcony, may be 200m away or nearer...

Got so good? They are more street smart but also more aggressive than us. Are Malaysians that wonderful as sales people? Have not seen many good sales people in Malaysia, more like a take it or leave it attitude even in selling high price properties. I have seen many good sales people in Hong Kong in contrast, great sales attitude even in selling small items.
Yes Malaysians working in Singapore used to be very pleasant to work with, however, nowadays there are many who come in the recent years and they are obnoxious with this big Malaysia, small Singapore mentality (talking figuratively, not physically) as if we owe it to them to make a living in Singapore.

Yap. That.

Haha yeah lor, they can be very proud hor...the Malaysians working here used to try to blend in by changing their accent but nowadays can see many don't bother and some more talk very loudly, ever met one from KL who thinks she is so able to be fluent in Cantonese...what happened to English as a working language?! Hi Ginfreely, no guarantee in this world. Just because one maid acted badly, we cannot tar everyone with the same brush. So because they may still steal even if we treat them well, we should treat them badly? Just treat them as you will a fellow human being and give respect where its due.
Bros, the story about the girls squatting, etc is really weird. This is as how many people (women) would go for supper in JB in that time of the night? Also, i had a couple of times in the past where either friends, family and once even my wife did not receive a stamp on the password and in the end, we got it resolved.
All 4 times without the use of money. One time, when they started the MACS thing, my mums passport had problems with her MACS sticker and they could not find when she entered. We wasted half an hour but were soon sent on our way.
This case is very extreme but in a way, although i feel sorry for her, she really breached the rules not once but multiple. She could have just waited, reversed out or got out of the car and notify another booth/sought help.
I agree with you. the whole incident sounds very suspicious and does not make sense. seems more likely they want to seek compensation money from malaysia police(rather stupid as they have no idea how malaysia police despise such prostitues).
Nobody who is a singaporean would go into malaysia without getting the passport stamped. everyone who travels to JB for often would know that the PLUS electronic card is to pay toll and has NOTHING to do with visa approval. rather pathetic attempt at bullsh!tting and alot of people got the wrong message and starts blasting the malaysia customs even before the facts are know>>> this might backfire and cause them to purposely go hard against genuine locals like us.
one of the girls name sounds like a mainland China girl to me. why would 2 ladies go to JB for supper at 1-2 am????? by themselves alone???? such cr@p tales by them.
my guess is that they were probably china pros would tried to smuggle themselves into Malaysia at that wee hours thinking security would be lax (probaly social visa in singapore expired )then but they were caught and made to strip and finally left to return with a warning(has happen before according to my friend who works in customs). why should custom be nooisy at 2 am at night??? even all local singaporeans know that you have to get chop and it is the same all over the world.
sometime the Malay custom people are kind and just let you off with a warning(happened to a relative of mine fro a minor offence), instead of a fine.
anyway, alot of these china girls are no angels. it has happen before even in singapore where the police questioned them at geylang at night and ask to see their passport and they later go to the press and cow peh cow bu and claimed they were victimised and demand the police apologise and so on. once you apologise then they demand compensation( literally thousands).
they are known to go to press(who love to sensationalise things to increase circulation) and even their own embassy twists and turn the story into one of harassments and threatend all sort of lawsuits. believe me , these China people are full of lies and cheats(I seem them behave likewise in beijing and guangzhou even to their own public security bureau people (equivalent of cops).
recently there was crack down on such phonecall psudokidnapping cheats in malaysia and singapore and they were almost all China or Taiwan gangsters and female crooks.
in this case i rather believe the Malaysia police or custom is right. sounds very suspicious these two ladies of the night!!:D:D:D. I have travellled to JB almost every week for more than 30 years and have NEVER encounter a single untoward incident at the custom .

Hi all. I have been looking at JB houses since more than 10 years ago when i was in my late 20s. I used to drive into Johor very often during my off days. Back then Bukit Indah was still developing and the showhouses there were both big and beautiful, not to mention cheap. Like what i always say to my wife "See already saliva all come out!" Prices were around RM250K then. The plan then was to buy a holiday home with a view to retire when old. At least that was the plan then. After reading some posts in this forum, it seems that this have changed - at least for some people. Nowadays, it is more to live there and commute everyday to Sing.
Wow.
I convinced myself then that I will not be able to afford a landed house in Sing. The only way to make a landed dream come true is in JB. This is of course true till today. :D
The JB house bug never go off and till today, I am still admiring JB houses. :D However what makes me hesitate to commit is not so much the crime news, not so much the whimisical and fanciful policies changes (the recent finger printing being a prime example) which the M'sian govt is famous for but more because I realise that a house/family is more than just the 4 walls. It is not so much how beautiful or big a house is...it is more of what is contained within.
You see, I reckon that a big and beautiful landed home will not make my wife and kids happy forever. True, they will be mesmerised in the beginning but the magic will soon wear off when you start to realise you have a another home to upkeep - reno, maintenance, fees, furnitures, etc....a large undertaking if you want to keep the magic going. Do i have the time and energy? not to mention about the $.
At least for me, the analogy its like buying toys for kids...after couple of days, they are no longer interested in that toy and are looking for something else...and yet many of us never realise true happiness cannot be bought and we still go out to buy the next toy for our kids..
Looking at the abandoned houses in some of the older parts of Bukit Indah serves as a reminder that it is not easy to always keep this magic going.
For those who have committed and who are living in JB, I read your posts with admiration and even envy, at least you have more balls than me. :D

KUALA LUMPUR: RON95 petrol and NGV fuel will be banned from being sold to foreign registered vehicles from tomorrow, the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism announced today.
RON95 petrol would however be allowed to be sold to foreign registered motorcycles as an exception.
Following the move, the requirement to produce Mykad by Malaysians using foreign registered vehicles for purchasing RON95 petrol at all petrol stations throughout the country had been withdrawn, the ministry said in a statement here today.
On August 1 last year, a directive to ban sales of RON95 petrol to foreign registered vehicles nationwide was imposed with the exception given to Malaysians who could produce the Mykad for verification.
The ministry in the statement clarified that the government had received feedback of leakages due to abuse of of the Mykad for purchasing RON95 petrol.
According to the ministry, petrol station operators at border areas had also complained of difficulties in controlling and ensuring the directive on the petrol ban was fully complied with.
"On this issue, the government is of the view that the ban on all foreign registered vehicles from buying RON95 petrol and the withdrawal of the condition that allowed purchase of RON95 petrol on producing the Mykad throughout the country with the exception of motorcycles, is reasonable," the ministry said.
The ministry clarified that the ban also covered NGV fuel following the discovery that 311,000 litres of NGV fuel were sold to foreign registered vehicles each year.
" At the rate of the current subsidy, the NGV fuel subsidy enjoyed by foreigners amounted to RM360,000 each year," the statement added. -- BERNAMA

welcome to the forum.
However, not many people here bought the house solely for material needs, or the feel of owning a big unit with land and all only.
Its the better quality of life, a more relaxed environment, which you cannot get in Singapore.
And also the savings that you can get by staying in JB.
having a big unit with land is more of a bonus to many of us.

Wow Polyman, you were there long ago and yet you did not buy?
Its true that a house does not necessarily equate to a home. Its not a new toy though, at least to my wife and immediate family members. Its an escape valve and a new way to live your life with more greenery and fresher air whilst not having to keep watching the taps, lights or aircon usage every other day.
My wife for one dreads going back to SG, same for my dad as well now. My son has much more space to run around and drive his toy cars around my porch. Its something that we can move around in and the high ceiling and internal park helps as well whenever i need to relax. Being in SG, where i live, there are so many people (quite a few of which are foreigners) loitering around our void decks, making noises, drinking and dirtying the place. Sometimes we even got woken up by loud motorcycles/motor cars or their antics downstairs when they inevitably got drunk.
These and the ever spiraling costs of living are the things we are fed up with. You can't buy happiness with money but you sure can get yourself more options. At least now with houses in MY, i can have "holidays" in both countries and also change the scenery whenever my wife want.

We all have our basket of reasons why we chose to move over to Johor - and some have moved back too, for various reasons. Hangyong's note reflects the jist of the core reasons. And those who both work in Singapore and with children not being home-schooled or in good private schools have a hugely difficult time balancing it all with little time for sleep. There are many other reasons, chief of those being that many simply cannot continue to afford to live in Singapore with any degree of comfort.
But yesterday I found one that gave me pause: a dear friend who is only 44 has just been diagnosed with cancer. Highly successful, happy family, highly stressed for years in a job he actually enjoyed. I was finally able to visit them, two months after the diagnosis. Now, while he is getting the best possible treatment and can afford the special food and such, my personal feeling was that the quality of air (HDB apartment in AMK) was quite different from Nusajaya's. He is on chemo and has to be very careful of the possibility of infection. It was worrying.

S’pore duo to file complaint against M’sia Immigration
By Jeanette Tan and Faris Mokhtar
The two Singaporean women who were detained and allegedly mistreated by the Johor Customs are set to file an official complaint against the Immigration Department of Malaysia.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) told Yahoo! Singapore that the two women had met its consular officers to discuss the issue, with the women also recounting the incident to them.
He said the women had indicated they wanted to lodge a formal complaint to the Malaysian High Commission about the alleged mistreatment that they experienced while being detained in Johor.
It is understood that the MFA will help to forward the complaint, once it has been made, to the Malaysian High Commission.
The spokesperson added that its consulate in Johor Bahru has also contacted the Malaysian immigration authorities to inquire on the immigration and detention procedures the Singaporean women were subjected to.
Last week, the two Singaporean women in question -- Lim Lili and Zhan Tingting (not their real names) -- drove across the Causeway for early morning supper without getting their passports stamped.
They claim to have used a lane which was not manned and, as it was their first time experiencing the new biometric scanner at the counter, Lim used the intercom and tried to ask another officer for help.
Both waited at the counter for five minutes before they decided to move on as Lim thought that there would be another counter for them to scan their fingers. But they realised there were none.
Shortly after when they realised their mistake, they returned to the customs checkpoint but were subsequently sent to a nearby detention centre and ordered to strip and do squats in the nude.
Both women were detained in a locked, crowded room until 5pm the next day and were initially asked to pay a fine of RM6,000 (S$2,440). They were eventually let off with a stern warning.
The case has sparked outrage among Singaporeans with some questioning the standard procedures that detainees are subjected to by the immigration authorities in Malaysia. Others also called on the MFA to launch a proper investigation on the incident.
Meanwhile, the Immigration Department of Malaysia is conducting an internal probe into the case.
But the assistant director of the Special Administration Unit at the Malaysian Immigration headquarters, Kaisan bin Kassim, told Yahoo! Singapore that he is not in a position to comment, as the case is now being handled by the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs.
However, his department, which is based in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, is taking steps to look into the incident internally.
"We will investigate this issue since it has been raised by Singapore through various reports, and we will take this issue seriously," he said in Malay. He said this also in response to comments from opposition Malaysian MPs about the incident.
He declined to comment further asked if what the Singaporean women had allegedly experienced was standard procedures.
However, other representatives from within the Immigration Department headquarters that Yahoo! Singapore spoke to said the two women could have "blown the story out of proportion".
A public relations officer, who wanted to be known only as Haidir, said the two ladies should have waited at the immigration counter for an officer to assist them, even if the booth was unmanned.
Otherwise, they should have approached any of the other officers in adjacent lanes, he added.
"It is common sense for one to get his or her passport stamped upon crossing the Causeway," said another immigration officer at the Immigration of Johor State headquarters.
"Just like Singapore, you need to get your passport stamped before you enter the country; if not, you will be arrested... so it is the same procedure in Malaysia," said the officer, who declined to be named.
While declining to comment further on the RM6,000 fine allegedly slapped on the Singaporeans, Haidir said it was possible that the women were making that part of the story up.
He further added that it was indeed standard procedure for detainees under the Immigrations department to be subjected to nude squats, particularly for females.
He added, however, that male officers will never conduct these strip searches and nude squats where female detainees are involved.
"It is always a female officer who will handle a female detainee," he emphasized.

Malaysia investigates alleged abuse of S'porean duo at customs
UPDATE
The Johor Immigration Department says it has completed its probe into the alleged mistreatment of two Singaporeans by immigration officers at the Johor Bahru customs checkpoint last week.
But when asked to comment, department director Mohd Nasri Ishak said, "Please wait for the decision by the department headquarters and the (home) ministry."
He declined further comment, reported Malaysian news portal Malaysiakini, as he said he did not want to contradict anything the headquarters might say.
However the case -- which saw two Singaporean ladies being strip-searched and ordered to do squats in the nude while being detained -- has sparked widespread outrage among Singaporean netizens.
Since it was first posted late on Tuesday evening, the story has been shared on Facebook over 3,000 times and drawn over 700 comments.
Some have called for a boycott of shops in Johor Bahru while others called for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to launch a proper investigation into the alleged abuse.
Yahoo! Fit-to-Post reader SH commented, "As consumers and tourists, we should vote with our pockets, boycott poor service shops and countries which do not appreciate our tourism dollars."
Another reader Koh wrote, "Is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs doing something about this ? This is a common trick of Malaysian Immigration to extort money from Singaporeans. Why do we need to go to JB to save money. Patronize a country that obviously do not welcome you?"
Yet others questioned why the two ladies ventured up to Johor Bahru for supper at such a late hour.
Reader Patriot wrote, "1.30am going to JB for supper just two ladies ? Must be out of your mind right? Singapore got so many night haunts for supper and yet you choose JB."
The two Singaporeans in question were reportedly detained by Malaysian law enforcement officers in Johor Bahru early last Thursday morning after they were accused of entering Malaysia illegally.
The pair were also ordered to strip and do squats with their hands on their ears for 10 times when they were sent to a detention centre.
The ordeal happened when Lim Lili and Zhan Tingting (not their real names) drove across the Causeway for supper at about 1:30am. When they reached the Malaysian customs checkpoint, both women inadvertently did not get their passports stamped.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, Lim said she had entered a lane that displayed a green light which signalled that the lane was in operation.
Lim recalled seeing that the lane had no immigration officer at the counter and it was at this point that they didn't get their passports stamped. Zhan then alighted to purchase a "Touch N Go" prepaid card to pay for their entry into Malaysia.
As it was their first time experiencing the new biometric scanner at the counter, Lim used the intercom and tried to ask another officer for help. Both waited at the counter for five minutes before they decided to move on as Lim thought that there would be another counter for them to scan their fingers.
But instead, they drove into Johor Bahru without getting their passports stamped and fingerprints scanned. Realising something was wrong, Lim drove her car back to the customs to obtain an entry chop for their passports.
However, when reached the customs at 2am, they were accused of entering Malaysia illegally and questioned by Malaysian law enforcement officers.
"When my statement was taken, both of us tried to explain ourselves and requested for them to check with Singapore's immigration department to check their departure timings and CCTV footage to clarify that once we knew there was a mistake, we quickly turned back," said Zhan.
The officers then curtly informed them of the offence and punishment, emphasising the RM10,000 (S$4,069) and jail term.
Both women were detained in a room until 5pm on 10 June and were only allowed to make a phone call each.
One of them called a friend while the other spoke to her brother, who contacted the Singapore High Commission in Malaysia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Somebody with a higher rank came and started speaking to us in Malay. A translator told us if we were willing to accept a fine of RM3,000 (S$1,220) to resolve the situation," said Zhan.
"And because we were so tired, we agreed to pay the fine and we signed an agreement that was in Malay," Zhan added.
Officers led the two women to an ATM machine to withdraw cash to pay the fine. But the women received another shock when the officers suddenly said that they will be sent to a detention centre in Pontian district and will be detained for up to 14 days.
Lim then asked the officers, "I thought we already settled the case?"
They were later handcuffed and sent to the women's division at the detention centre. Lim and Zhan met a female officer who ordered a strip search. Both women were made to strip and do squats with their hands on their ears for 10 times before they were allowed to change into their prison uniforms.
Zhan said: "The place was dirty and smelly, the roach-infested room was two-thirds of the basketball court, no bed, four wooden walls, with 50 people in it."
"We were treated like criminals even before we were pronounced guilty, it was humiliating. Most of the detainees were Filipinos and Indonesians without passports. We were the only Singaporeans."
After a night in the centre, the officers woke them up at 5am to do the Islamic morning prayers.
She said in the span of 24 hours, besides eating and praying, we were stuck in the room. When it was time to eat, we did not have forks and spoons and ate with our hands. We did not dare to finish eating, but the rest of the detainees told us to finish because if we did not, the officers will punish us."
At the detention centre, the two of them were bitten by mosquitoes and bugs the whole night. Zhan's hands and legs had red spots and her whole body hurt while Lim's back and neck were bitten, and her skin was red and itchy.
Both women were detained at the centre for 24 hours before another immigration officer transferred them back to the Malaysia customs and detained them for another six hours.
Zhan said that other immigration officers mocked them and asked if the detention centre was like a five-star hotel.
On Friday night, an official handed both woman a warning letter and informed them that they will not be charged, jailed or fined.
When Lim went to retrieve her car, she saw it was badly scratched and damaged. They were also told by an immigration officer who handled their departure proceedings that they would not be able to enter Malaysia easily next time.
Looking back, Zhan acknowledged their mistake but said, "This is only a trivial mistake. Does it warrant a need to detain us at the detention centre?"
The pair angrily added: "Next time even if you invite me over to Malaysia I wouldn't want go in!"
They were worried that the incident would affect their jobs, and wanted to remind their friends to be more careful when travelling to Malaysia.
Under their lawyer's advice, the pair might seek compensation from the Malaysian authorities.
This is not the first time Malaysian authorities have been accused of abusing their power. In November 2005, another woman was made to perform nude squats.
According to police, the nude squats are meant to dislodge any hidden illicit drugs but the incident led to the formation of an independent commission, which subsequently recommended that the practice be stopped.

Actually MY girls are in some ways better than our girls. On the whole, less materialistic and always ready to stand by her man. Gives him face too from the examples that i have seen rather than our girls who are very keen to put down their bfs or husbands anytime they get. One of my neighbours regularly kenna, feel bad for him but cannot say much as they are much older than us
Not really so for Malaysia girls nowaday. The standard has dropped. For every good example you quote, I can match it up with bad ones too.
My Malaysia tenants who graduated from University in Malaysia(the top one) actually showed black face at her JB boyfriend when he came looking for her, asking him why he came, in a terrible tone. Slam the door as she like She even left the room in a dusty state. Her room was in a mess during her stay. Not much different from those china girls that I rented my rooms too a couple of years ago. She moved out last year. After I keep increasing her rent she show me her true colours. But that was to make her leave without me show her the door.
At the beginning of this year, my cousin's wife from Ipoh was pregnant and irritated, she beat up his mum. Her whole family from Malaysia will turn up if you are not nice to her.
I guess to err is human, for most malaysian girl their education standard is lower and so tried to upgrade by marrying a Singaporean. Because Singaporean man are still perceived as the RICH son-in-law. At least a few living around me showed signs of it. Not long after, if not before marriage, they will make you buy things like houses, cars in their home town, so that they can retire there after the children have grown up. Which is perfectly fine too. But unless their idea of a retirement house is in a location that you can accept. I have friends whos wives came from Ipoh, Malacca...which their wives have insisted that they retire there.
A meek kitty cat also has the potential to turn into a tigeress. So those Singaporean man out there, know your status and know what you are getting in too. Don't be blinded by the love of wanting a submissive companion. Thats most important.
Happy mate hunting! :D

Boy, 2, dies after being hit by mum's car
AsiaOne
Wed, Jun 15, 2011
SINGAPORE - A little boy died on Monday afternoon after his mother accidentally reversed her car into him.
Two-year-old Henry was believed to have run up to his mother's car while she was backing the white multi-purpose vehicle into the driveway of their bungalow.
The Australian housewife, who was identified only as Mrs Harrington, did not realise that she had knocked over her son until a cab driver who was driving past the scene yelled at her to stop the car, reported The Straits Times.
Neighbours saw the distraught mother screaming and holding her son, according to The Straits Times report. She also performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on her son while waiting for the paramedics to arrive, reported the Chinese media.
Henry was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
Police are investigating the accident and have questioned the child's parents
The Straits Times reported that the Harrington family had moved to Singapore last September for work. The Australian High Commission here has offered to assist the family.
The child's body will be repatriated to Perth, Australia, where the funeral will be held. He is survived by his parents and one older sister, aged 4.

Squats not part of SOP, says Johor Immigration chief
The Star/Asia News Network
Tue, Jun 14, 2011
JOHOR BARU: Conducting a body search sometimes requires detainees to remove their clothing for thorough checks but squats were not part of the standard operating procedure, Johor Immigration director Nasri Ishak said Tuesday.
Nasri was commenting on a recent report by a Singapore daily on two Singaporean women who were told to strip naked and perform squats after they were detained for not having their passports checked at the Causeway.
"Removing clothes, however, is sometimes needed as it is essential for our officers to ensure that the detainees are not hiding any weapons," he said
He, however, assured that the Home Ministry would conduct investigations into the matter.
He added that these types of checks were conducted in a private room and the two Singaporean women were attended to by a female immigration official
Nasri said the women were eventually taken to the Pekan Nenas detention centre pending investigations to their case.
"After we forwarded the investigation papers, the Deputy Public Prosecutor in charge of the case decided that they should be deported back to their country," he said, adding that there was no reason for his officials to purposely humiliate the women.
It was previously reported that the incident had occurred at around 1.30am last Thursday when the women were exiting Malaysia.
The women, who had failed to get their passports chopped decided to make a U-turn upon discovering their mistake but were detained by immigration officials instead.
The women were then allegedly detained at the checkpoint for several hours before they were taken to the Pekan Nenas detention centre.
They were then told to strip naked, perform 10 squats and jailed for one night before they were eventually released back to Singapore at around 5pm the next day with a warning letter.

Was at Horizon Residence sales office today. Very impressive design and was told there will be Gurkha guards. Prices pretty reasonable but limited units left to choose. Feel so tempted. Should I or should I not? Any advice?
Hi Malapore, I wouldn't recommend Horizon Residence for many reasons. My family booked a couple of large units on a few of the highest floors in Dec. Paid the first 10 percent down payment. From Dec until now, the prices have increased by at least 20.5% for our units. But we chose to cancel our units and demand refund. I wouldn't go into the details as yet because we have not gotten our full refund (still chasing them every week).
But I need you to know they started selling this project since late last year even though they say they had a soft launch in Jan and an official launch in March, the contruction site is still pretty much the same since Jan, the progress is very slow.
Even though I bought at a discount, the price is still much higher than the price we paid for a much bigger unit at Fairway Suites which is within Horizon Hills (difference of more than 150 psf). Of course the gap has narrowed recently and more so in future as HH will price the condo higher knowing there is great demand outside. Horizon Residence's selling point is that they have very good view of the golf course at Horizon Hills. Location wise, it definitely cannot be compared to Sky Loft or Fairway Suites. Location is always more important than the design. An old condo at beach road/sixth avenue can win any suburban new condo handsdown anytime. :D
Also bear in mind, they claimed that there will be a new road leading to the main road used by NI residence, but I have also seen a notice written in Malay warning the contractor not to touch or use the road during construction as it is UEM property. I have asked NI sales exec, they say it is not confirmed whether or not the road will be linked as it has not being approved (UEM-gov linked). If not, the future residents will have a hard time taking a long route, passing by all the empty shop houses to reach the main road.
Also, don't quote me, but I heard they were involved in a lawsuit with another developer, I will not say who and what.
Yes, it is cheap compared to SG prices, but definitely expensive compared to MY prices. So is it still reasonable?
I do hope you consider carefully! If you want to know more, talk to the locals.

I am using the Civic Hybrid 1.3 and the mileage is about 18-19km/L while the manufacturer claimed 21.5km/L.
However, in Malaysia, as I constantly need to drive faster (using the highway most of the time in MY), it gets about 15-16km/L.
on the Prius, although its a 1.5L, the mileage is hitting about the same in Singapore, and slightly better for MY as the 1.5L engine is slightly better to handle the 110km/h speed than a 1.3L.
Both car mileage above are measured with 3 adults and 2 children on board, over about 1 month (for MY part) and a much longer period for the SG part.
I doubt the 1.8L will perform better leh. But I could be wrong lah... just stating my experience with the above 2 cars

Allow me to interject the discussion regarding the malaysian wives thread. Actually 10 years ago its quite true that Malaysian wives are much demure and show more respect to the husband. I am afraid now no more.. My own wife is a Malaysian and she sometimes boss me around ... imagine I am earning more than her and she can do this.. what if I earn less than her?
Her sister is one bitch. Kept RM 3500 of the RM 4000 salary that her hubby earn per month. He is so poor thing and had to work 7 days a week.. cant even have any entertainment and when the babies cry, we can all hear her berating the hubby and shouting at him to take care of the babies ( when its not his fault or job of course ).
SG wives can be better man. So please dont think about marrying a Malaysian wife just because u think she is better!

Hi Cathy I have to agree with u. Nowadays I see many Malaysian Girls getting so suck-up and lazy. You know my wife got like many brothers and sisters and ever since I married her years, they have automatically decided not to look for jobs and makan on us from breakfast to dinner. And to top it off, they can even CHOOSE what they want to eat.. chicken chop, steak etc.. at which resturants etc when they are not even paying. One or twice a year is fine with me but they are doing it like every weekend and its up to 3 time per week.
Imagine I marry my wife ( 2 of us ) and when we had to go for dinner, the whole family turned up and makan without paying ( which amount to over 10 pax ). One of her sister actually got married and u know what, bring her husband and two kids home EVERYDAY to eat and sleep etc from Monday-Sunday ). I pity my father-in-law in a way.. He tot that marry out one daughter his life could be better but end up he gota feed HER hubby and THEIR two kids. Damn.. poor ting

My condolence.
Years ago I had a close encounter of similar sort in downtown SG. My car was parked in front of a grocery shop where 5 to 6 women were chatting noisily in the shop. As I started the car engine and just about to move off, someone shouted me to STOP and then he rushed to my car, bent down and PULLED out a toddler from underneath my car! The woman who was looking after the toddler got too absorbed in conversation and the toddler crawled out of the shop, across the 5-foot way, on to the street and got under my parked car. Luckily those days air-con car was rare, else i could have not hear the shouting and would move off my car.

This is partially true, some will still ride roughshod over you. Either they won't bother greeting you or even acknowledging your presence or they just turn away. This is despite your giving their family a monthly allowance and sponsoring exam fees for a few of them. It doesn't even affect them that you had to fix their kitchen, change sofa to the rosewood type and add in new kitchen cabinets. Worse is you give them another 29" tv(years back), they expect a plasma/lcd one.

What a close shave.... Freaked me out.....
Im always scared while reversing..... (Yeah no license in Spore yet!)

Not too concern about any profit , got free stay for last 3 years which is what suprise me . When I bought the unit, I was prepared that it was money spend for good . Even if I dont spend it on JB house, I might spend it elsewhere which you cant even see.
My house is not at HH , it is at Sutera Mall area , the resale is around 600K . Newlaunch is 730K with smaller land area . BTW any bros in this forum is staying in Sutera Utama area ? S'pore asks Malaysia about two women's ordeal in JB
June 15, 2001
SINGAPORE'S Foreign Affairs Ministry has asked the Malaysian immigration authorities for more information on the treatment of two Singaporean women detained for nearly 48 hours in Johor Baru.
The women - who wanted to be known only as Ms Chang and Ms Lim - told The Straits Times that they were handcuffed, thrown behind bars and forced to undress and perform squats.
Their nightmare happened after they accidentally entered Johor Baru without getting their passports stamped, by driving through what they said was an unmanned immigration lane.
'Our consulate in JB has been in touch with the Malaysian immigration authorities to enquire on the investigation and detention procedures that the two Singaporeans underwent,' said a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman.
Ms Chang, an insurance industry manager in her late 30s, and Ms Lim, an estate agent in her late 20s, met up with consular officers here yesterday to recount their ordeal.
They had driven across the Causeway for a snack in the early hours of last Thursday. After realising they had accidentally gone straight through immigration, they immediately did a U-turn. They said they were questioned by immigration officers, and then taken to the Pekan Nenas detention centre in Pontian where they were ordered to strip and do 10 squats each.

My wife had the same reasons for buying the JB house.... Thousands of dollars spent on holidays every year....
She said might as well get a house in JB even if i dun get the money back. Profit was never the motive for her.... Memories and ofcourse .... knowing where your money went was more important.
On a different note bro you have profitted already what..... 50% good already you know..... U were wise.... Bought 3 years back... People who buy now or next year dunno when they gonna break even and then make some money..... Cause developers factor in all the speculator bit already unlike Spore.

My Malaysia tenants who graduated..
The trouble with the Singaporean Gong Kia is that....why must eat at restaurant? Why eat at expensive places then grumble? Simple things like that could have been avoided in the first place. (I was just pulling your legs! :D Sorry if I sounded too hush! My mil also happen to like to whole family go for seafood. The problem is whos going to pickup the tab? Thankfully now me and my hubby are vegetarians. :D)
[QUOTE=cathylmg;754147]Imagine I marry my wife ( 2 of us ) and when we had to go for dinner, the whole family turned up and makan without paying ( which amount to over 10 pax ). My wife found my nick already....

Sometimes money isn't everything.
yeah i agree that money can't buy everything. Leaving the orang laut that way without electricity and water is like leaving them to die slowly. This may in turn back fire by having more crime and giving more trouble to the government.Yes government still have lots of land at least make some for them as they have sacrifice a lot. Imagine the Coastal highway that isJust felt pity when i am actually visited that area myself to see the living condition there. Although they are poor they do not steal instead they are now setting up small stalls infront of their house selling worms for the guys who wants to fish there to make ends meet.

Lucky todays papers say beauty is not gonna factor in divorce settlements...

Beauty not key to big divorce sum: Lawyers
Debate after judge rules women's looks are not irrelevant
By Yen Feng
PRETTY women may receive less alimony following a divorce because their good looks mean they are likely to remarry earlier.
This controversial suggestion has been raised in legal circles after a High Court judge ruled that asking if a woman was attractive during a divorce settlement hearing was not irrelevant.
The ruling earlier this month was the first time a judge had raised the issue of physical beauty in such cases.
It has divided lawyers by raising a series of questions, not least: Who decides what is beautiful?
Ten lawyers specialising in family law told The Straits Times that the ruling was unlikely to have an impact on future divorce settlement arguments.
They said that even if a woman's physical attractiveness were a factor, it would be a 'very, very small' one. To understand why, lawyers pointed to the Women's Charter, which says judges must consider 'all circumstances of the case' - which could arguably include a woman's appearance
Thats why what Zhang Wuji's mum told him (when she was dying was right), the prettier the lady, the more unreliable her words are.

Nothing can be more tragic than killing your own child by accident... ghosh

For me i will carry anything but the bag.... Even she going toilet i try to avoid carrying it... if wallet never mind i will slip into my pocket....
But bag....:eek::eek:
I rather carry all the groceries instead.... if carrying luggage = being a man...
Talking about MCPs...my hubby has to be in the driver's seat no matter what...he has to know everything...decide everything....he's the one with the financial burden, so I let him have his way lor...respect him mah...:)
Thats why I said it depends on who calling the shorts. If you ever need the women to go out and work to help with the family finances, pay for the house, daily expenses, then still expect her to be as meek as a kitty cat and as submissive as a japanese women, do the house work, and still has enough strength to take care of her looks and entertain you at night, be prepared... :P

Lim Lili and Zhan Tingting (not their real names) drove across the Causeway for supper at about 1:30am.
From the latest development sounds like they are Singaporeans. I think it is right for the 2 ladies to pursue this, if i were them i would not let the matter rest if i have been mistreated as they described. There are many good things in Malaysia but i am afraid the immigration department is not one of them.

I just got thumb printed a second time last night. Seems like communication is not working well on their party.
The very crux of the problem about Malaysia is implementation. The guy at the leadership says one thing, what you see on the ground is another. This guy called Datok Mahmood Adam is the driving force behind a whole lot of changes. He is the one who said to the press, thumbprinting only once, said this on 8th June 2011.

If this is true, then it may be a bit too late for some of my relatives and friends. Suddenly this week out of a sudden got called and people told me,
Got people on internet recommending JB, do you know him? I think what he say may be true, can buy or not ah? I want to come in and visit, can?
I even have friends of my relatives(those who already bought) asking them to bring them in to visit now.

Actually, I recognise the fact that I need to feed my wife n her parents and sometimes her siblings if possible. But the fact of the matter is that her siblings are 20 + years old and decided not to work for the rest of their lives while both my wife and I slog 15 hours a day and almost 7 days a week to feed them. Its getting out of hand. I dont know if other families in Malaysia behaves like that but if they do work hard, I dont mind spending money on them!

I would just tell my partner nicely it is too much a burden for me to feed so many people. Her parents are ok... but only basic necessities and by that i would say MYR1k a month is enough, really. For the 2 ladies case, it may be that as our citizenship has been given out too freely, people are already thinking that SG passport can be owned by people of any country, thus driving down the formerly high perceived value. Had a friend who was asked where were we originally from, are you from PRC when people saw our red passport at the customs. Even in US customs, i heard from learned friend, due to the ease of travel with our passports, stealing or killing to get to the SG passport (in the past) was something desperate people would do(at least in the past).
Now all they do is get PR within a few months of coming here and get their citizenship once they declare. One time while clearing customs in the US, they scrutinized me when they saw SG passport and one even asked purpose, how come want to come here, am i actually from China, etc. When i cleared and asked my colleague, was told because quite a few who are clearly from China are using SG passport. Some are allegedly doing "special business" over there.
One day if our passports don't get the former recognition, we know who to thank, not the new citizens but those highly paid people who are sleeping!

Sometimes i get worried too because she was always worrying about the level of fuel left. Even though there is still 1/4, she would keep on coming after me because she was afraid she would run out of fuel for a short trip to the market (back then this was in SG, not JB). Even when one of the cars would tell her, 150km left, she would still be afraid to go out for a 3 minute drive to buy food.
Got me so worried for her that, not only one night but many nights, i would take all 4 cars one by one to pump each one to full tank and check all tyre pressures and battery water. This is on top of weekly checks on water, engine oil as well as various oils.
One time she drove back home with a flat tyre and told me, she has to go to work in the morning at 6am, so she needs the flat fixed, luckily i got all the tools but as her tyre was completely flat out, had to pump to at least half full and swerving the tyre out before fixing it. Got all tired and dirty but tyre fixed. Looked around, she already went to bed right after telling me to fix.
Finally went to sleep at 3plus that night and woke up early next morning to check on her tyres then i went to work.
The funny funny thing was, when i was in US for the 2 plus years, my mum and dad told me she was a mini Wuqi, able to do everything on her own. The minute i was back, she becomes a helpless maiden(or a smart one who pretends so she doesn't have to do anything)

Hi Cathylmg,
Not for my case, neither entertainment, money or work is required. She has a maid and she has the money she need for everything. Money from the biz goes straight into her pocket. Still remembered, one time in one month i spent about 20k on her(that was 2nd year into marriage) for tours, etc. After spending all that money on her and her relatives for the things she wanted to buy, i was in the states with her and she wanted another 2 bags, bought for her and in the end when we went back, she still wanted me to pay her bills, etc which i duly do.
I almost became broke that month until my pay day as i had spent most of the money i had for her on top of giving her $2k for emergency money and buying her a new phone as well.
Imagine how i felt when i needed to pay an additional bill and out of convenience, asked her to lend me a grand total of $100 SGD. She gave me a very long lecture on how come i don't even have one hundred dollars, how come no saving, how come i don't even know how to think, don't give her sense of security, etc etc etc.
As it was late and i didn't have my other ATM card with me, i kept quiet, took the money, put into my atm card and paid the bill. As soon as it was 12 midnight though, i went and draw money and straightaway paid her back.
When she was working, it was worse, she would worry on Friday about work on Monday so it spoils the weekend and alot of other stuff too. She doesn't have to entertain much at all either as she was always stressed about her job but always asks me to take leave from mine everytime she likes. Its like her $1500 jobs is way more important than a $6000 job at that time even though she didn't realise that measly 6k job was paying all her bills.
Until now, still sad when i think about this.

Hey everyone, I've finally managed to keep up with all the postings... so much stuff to read.
I've read a lot of opinions about the pros and cons and Malaysians, and I feel there are a lot of generalization being done here. There are 28 million people in Msia, with 60%+ Malays, followed by Chinese, Indians and natives. There are 13 states and 2 Federal Territories, with our East Malaysians being culturally different from the West Malaysians. The places where the Malaysians grow up all contribute to their upbringing, with comparisons done between small town people and city folk. Depending on the background of the Malaysians that you meet; some will be nice, humble and down-to-earth people... whereas others might be arrogant and proud, etc. Please don't generalize so much since there are too many factors contributing to a person's upbringing.
Even with Singapore being the size it is, it wouldn't be fair for me to say those staying in Hougang are nicer (my aunt and cousins grew up in Hougang) than those staing in Tampines or Punggol. I've met a lot of Singaporeans now that I worked in SG and also 15 years ago when I came to Sg to work for 4 months after my STPM. They have all been very nice people, although I have met some idiots before.
If anything, I would generalize a difference between the older generation and the youngsters nowadays, both in SG and MY. The younger generation mostly prefer not to work hard; want high salary and short working hours and will not be willing to go the extra mile for the company, regardless of male or female. They are the ones who grew up with parents who worked hard and sacrificed a lot so that they could have a better life.
Ps. counting down the months to my move to Nusajaya in October 2011.

hi
If you are looking for condo in JB city, do check out KSL City (D'esplanade) too. About 5 mins drive from the custom. More expensive, but better quality (you have to decide for yourself). If Spore's MRT goes to JB (and if it's near causeway CIQ), then travel to and from Spore will be very convenient. ..
Was at Horizon Residence sales office today. Very impressive design and was told there will be Gurkha guards. Prices pretty reasonable but limited units left to choose. Feel so tempted. Should I or should I not? Any advice?

You make my think of a long ago millionaire friend. He was rich with businesses in Singapore and New Zealand.
His relatives always come look him up for money. One day he had this realisation that if he give them fish they only live for a day, and if he teach them how to fish then they eat for life. But one thing, if he teach them his trade, he will go out of business.
Soon he came up with this idea, those relatives who always pester him for money, he meet them at Belaire. :D Make them attend talk and make them signup under him. If they want money, best go and do sales for themselves. Also make money for him by signing people up under his line. MLM business. :D
Successful people always think differently. In this case, instead of lend money to his relatives, he made them work for him for free. :D Kowtow to him! :D

Ps. counting down the months to my move to Nusajaya in October 2011.
hear hear!! Cheers to the growing family of us here in JB. =)

Hi I have tried talking things out with my wife but she will quarrel endlessly and say that I am sowing discord. She asked what problems do I have when she treats her brother and sister with makan?
I say no problem but now at age 20-28, they have been shaking leg at home for the past 5 years.. u think thats ok? Therefore this is one of the main reason why I am moving back to SG after I have settled all my units rental in Nusajaya.. at least I can still stay in Spore and enjoy rental returns from Iskandar. hehe
Hi horizonhills, read your story and I feel for you, bro. Have you spoken to your wife about this? Tell her that both of you need to save money for investmet/retirement/etc and cannot always pay for extended family's meal? Also, the fact that you're doing them more harm by "giving them a fish" instead of teaching them how to fish... how to support them for the long-term since both of you need to save for your own family.

Sorry if I've created some confusion here. It's Horizon Residence indeed. Situated right beside HH. A medium density development which will house 440 units. Though it doesn't comes with the golf course, any units above level 6 facing the pool will come with a bonus view of the HH golf course. The problem is all such units have been sold.
Pretty keen in getting one facing Jusco. Discussed with my wife and she's supportive. I'm going back on Friday to look see look see again.
have you considered HH's fairway suites and setia's sky gardens in the immediate vicinity? mentioned by wuqi earlier there are some considerations when it comes to access for this project. imho, the developer also have not had an iconic development to prove themselves (i may yet be wrong). not dissuading but pointing you to a few so that you can see what fits and then make your final informed decision. i know the current situation is like morning market with projects being booked left right center but you do have options to consider not just that. if your final decision is HR at least you can happily say you've surveyed all on offer. =)

hi
If you are looking for condo in JB city, do check out KSL City (D'esplanade) too. About 5 mins drive from the custom. More expensive, but better quality (you have to decide for yourself). If Spore's MRT goes to JB (and if it's near causeway CIQ), then travel to and from Spore will be very convenient. ..
Thanks. KSL city was within my scope earlier but left out eventually. My sole purpose of getting a place in JB is to find a peaceful, serene, away from city living lifestyle as I plan to have my first child 2 years later. I would relocate my mum n wife to JB for the initial 3-5 years when my baby is born. I hope to give them a stress free environment coupled with some greeneries and humble living. Escalating cost, kiasuism and arrogance of people in Singapore is taking a toll on us.
I was at a fine dining place 2 weeks back with my wife. It's suppose to be a delicate and classy settings when suddenly a child (5yrs old max) sprung from nowhere waving and yelling at the top of his voice trying to catch attention of the waiter. When the waiter approach, the kid just commanded "Get me a coke!". The best part is that the parent just let him be and continued their wine tasting. From their singlish, attire and attitude, it's not difficult distinguishing them as typical Singaporean. Gosh! Is that how a child should behave?
Me and my wife are 100% Singaporean.

Effective today, 15th June 2011... all SG-plated cars cannot pump RON95.
Previously Malaysians driving SG-plated cars can pump RON95.
Actually if I am damn hard-up, I can still get my father-in-law or wife who are Malaysia to help me pump petrol into the petrol containers when they are there to pump for their cars.. But the issue, every month I need to pump 300 litre at least.. and if one jelly can can fill 5 liter, I need about 60 jelly cans.. Quite a hassle to save RM 300 a month.. might as well pump RON 97.. Now my petrol is estimated to be RM 1000 a month or slightly more as I run 4200km per month on average now.

On the sibblings not willing to work part, you really can't do anything since their parent also can't get them to go to work. Best leave it for the time being lest it sow discord between husband and wife.

that is disgusting! grrr bad manners have no place in a civilized society unless the child and their responsible parents should claim they're from the line of barbarians/neanderthals.
oh btw are you aware you need to purchase a property >RM$500k as a foreigner? That will limit quite a fair bit of your options if you're looking at condos/apartments. how bout landed? i think there are still a sprinkling of properties in the area at this pricing region. Also tag an additional ~RM$11k foreign levy plus the miscellaneous fees to the asking price. hope u will find your dream home in time to come!!

Haha remind me of an ex-staff who is Malaysian. She is meek when talking to hubby but not meek in the office, plot with colleagues to tell the hubby she is working OT when actually she is going majong session with them...and yes always boasts that her Singaporean hubby is a graduate (she is a clerk)...

I do notice the oblivious attitude towards bad behavious if Singaporean's own children. Its like that when you just couldn't control it. But if your kid did something wrong, they will make it sure you and your kids apologise to their kids. Over protective. Thats the attitude now! Sucks bigtime!

Aiyoh, no wonder you said Malaysian wives better...

if you are buying solely for saving on petrol, you will surely regret it because just on petrol savings alone cannot recover the initial cost difference between a hybrid and its conventional counter part.

actually, topgear (the awesome brit car show) did a test and it turns out a 6 cylinder mean machine of a bmw is more fuel efficient than a hybrid with flat out driving and you get the joy of the ride as well. I have driven a prius on a round UK road trip before and it feels very wobbly to me on high speed, corners are spongy with some roll and brakes are not 'eating' enough. although round about town was great. i have a friend with a honda crz who reports getting 14-15km/l which is fairly pedestrian for a hybrid imho. having said that it may be a hazard but i absolutely loved the silent startup and sliding across the morning lawn with absolute hush in full electric mode. Good getaway from parents or wifey if need to wahaha.
actually with modern car technologies like regenerative braking, start-stop and engine downsizing, tall gear in automatics (6 gears and above) and most importantly, driving green most cars even the fuel guzzlers can easily go the extra mile (literally).
having said all these I am actively looking for stock counters that delve into lithium, mining processing or related business did not find any in sgx le. did I miss any?

the way they test is not fair to the Prius because it is set to move quick in the show.
I drove a 3.5L V6 Camry in Australia, and it travels about 15-16km/L on clear highway, about the same as I am getting on my Civic Hybrid and Prius now.
But in city driving... aiyo! The V6 only can go about 8-9km/L while the Hybrids can give be about 18-19km/L.
If seriously want to save, go diesel... the Audi A8 (also in an episode of Top Gear) went from London to Edinburgh and back on 1 full tank.

Solve JB crawl chaos STar online
WE are perplexed and saddened by the problems of the never ending queues, jams, and time consuming clearance at the Immigration check points in Johor Baru particularly during peak hours, on weekends and during festive and holiday seasons.
These have been highlighted by numerous travellers since the opening of the ‘New’ CIQ complex in 2008 but it has not been addressed satisfactorily by the authorities.
The cause of the problems has been fully explained by people like V. Kumar (The Star, June 9) in which he zeroed in on the slow clearing systems not helped by severely under manned counters.
We also feel that the CIQ complex is badly planned and does not facilitate speedy clearance.
This has caused a lot of problems to travellers, visitors, workers and even investors (and/or potential investors in the Iskandar Development area) etc. Just imagine over hundreds of thousand people trapped every day in these jams and you multiply that by the number of hours each of these people have to queue each day!
When will the authorities wake up before the CIQ in JB become infamously known as the worst managed Immigration entry point in this region!
We simply have no business wasting travellers’ time by our mismanagement/bad planning/inadequate facilities and ineffective procedures or corrective actions (looks more like the lack of it).
Even more disheartening is the badly introduced/ill-timed biometric finger scanning procedures that have resulted in total chaos.
Didn’t the authorities have a test run to study the impact for this procedure and how it will further compound the clearing/waiting time to an already bad and unresolved problem?
Travellers had to spend five to six hours due to the finger scanning procedures during the holiday seasons.
Even up to Sunday morning one of my friends spent three hours at Immigration, even though she was at the checkpoint at 7am.
We would like to appeal to our Prime Minister to have his walkabout at the immigration check points in JB during peak hours.
Can our Yang Berhormat observe the queue involved (up to 5-6 hours) that the poor travellers have to face and how much they are suffering and unjustifiably held to ransom by a bad system/management etc.?
Can we still rely on the Immigration authorities as they have not been able to solve the problem after so many years.
And they even recently said that the introduction of the ‘Biometric System cannot be blamed for the massive jams’.
We beg your pardon? What then is causing the increased clearing/queuing time?
One must, in our national interest, look seriously at the damage to our image, credibility, economy and downtime with this avoidable catastrophe that has caused severe hardship to a lot of people.
No cost is too big if you look at the cost of not solving the problem. And please, no more denials, excuses or delays.
LAMLIM,
Kuala Lumpur.

Though Malaysia is big compared to Singapore, it is not really big among nations...even in big countries with over 200m people USA, like it or not there is generalisation of people, i recall working with a group of Boston people and they were commenting alot of the people in more mid/south states being too conservative, lazy, can't stand their behaviour blah blah...
Of course it's not... MY is smaller compared to Indo or even Phillipines... i'm just comparing SG & MY since we share similar cultures. But you have a point in saying people everywhere will generalize... can't run away from that fact...

Yes i travel 4k a month :)
I think the Civic Hybrid will be good because it costs the same as a normal 1.6 Civic, but it's a JDM with more features and not made in South East Asia. My wife drives one and we'll travel around 1500-2000km/month, only pump petrol 3 times/month if we drive back to KL. If just in SG, we pump twice/month only. The Prius is more expensive, so takes longer to recoup the extra price for the hybrid.

Nude squat case 'a serious issue': Minister
The Star/ANN, Daily Chilli
Wed, Jun 15, 2011
KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ng Yen Yen is taking the latest nude squat case involving two Singaporean women seriously.
"This is not a small issue. Anything that might affect Malaysia's image and people’s perception of us as a hospitable country is not a small issue."
"The officials must be taken to task if they are found to have broken the rules," she said, when asked about the matter at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday.
"One shouldn’t be asked to do nude squats at all unless you have an absolute reason for suspicion. And it must be done with proper supervision."
"I’m definitely not for it. Nude squats shouldn’t be a punishment. If you think they are doing illegal things, you detain them".
"We are an international player so we must make sure things are done the right way," Ng said.

Malaysia tops in terms of safety
The Star/Asia News Network
Wed, Jun 15, 2011
By Shaila Koshy
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia ranked first among 19 upper-middle income countries in terms of safety but came in second to last globally on its human rights record.
"The country is safe, ranking top among 19 income peers and on par with (high income) countries such as France and Belgium.
"However, abuses by the police still occur," the World Justice Project's (WJP) Rule of Law Index 2011 report, released on Monday, stated.
Out of 66 countries, Malaysia at 12th place also beat the United States (13th) and Britain (14th) in terms of safety.
"The index measures how laws are implemented and enforced in practice and affect people's lives," said WJP Rule of Law Index director Juan Botero.
WJP executive director Hongxia Liu said achieving the rule of law was a constant challenge and "a work in progress" in all countries, adding: "The Index is not designed to shame or blame but to provide useful reference points for countries in the same regions with comparable legal cultures and similar income levels. The sub-factors in each factor in the Index was scored between 0' (lowest) and 1' (highest)."
The Order and Security factor was based on the sub-factors of how civil conflict is effectively limited, absence of crime and people not resorting to violence to redress grievances Malaysia scored 1 for the first and over 0.5 for the latter two.
The Fundamental Rights factor was based on the sub-factors of equal treatment and absence of discrimination, right to life and security, due process, fundamental labour rights, freedom of opinion/expression/belief/religion, arbitrary interference of privacy, and freedom of assembly and association.
Malaysia scored slightly more than 0.5 for the first four but well below 0.5 for the freedoms and privacy sub-factors.
The report stated that Malaysia presented a "contrasting view as with many other countries in the East Asia and Pacific region."
The Government was "reasonably accountable" in comparison with its income peers "although corruption, political interference, and impunity still exist", it added.
While the judiciary and police/military scored above 0.5 for absence of corruption, the Executive scraped it at 0.5.
The other countries in the upper-middle income group include Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and Venezuela.
Noting that the efficiency and transparency of government agencies could still improve, the report recommended that efforts be made in the area of access to civil justice where Malaysia ranked 44th globally and 14th in the upper-middle income group.

And for those of us who have been debating Singaporean Girls vs Malaysian Girls maybe the professor from SMU has an answer ???
So maybe we gotta look for Pinays/Indos/Thais/Cambodians/Laos/Tribals next time
S’pore girls are materialistic: SMU study
A new research has shown that Singaporean women are "significantly" more materialistic than their American peers. Published earlier this year, the study by Singapore Management University (SMU) psychology professor Norman Li surveyed about 400 psychology students aged between 19 and 21.
The local females polled an average of 3.98, compared to the American women's score of 3.74. The closer the score is to five, the more materialistic one is deemed to be.
Survey findings also named a man's social status as the top criterion for Singaporean women when it comes to looking for a potential spouse, reported The Straits Times. Next on the list is kindness, followed by a lively personality. On the contrary, American women valued kindness the most, followed by looks, then a man's social standing.
While the study did not ask respondents for the reasons behind their answers, Professor Li said he is not surprised by the findings.
"Maybe Singaporean women are just being realistic. Here, you need a lot of money to survive and afford an affluent lifestyle. Maybe they are just being practical," said the 45-year-old American-born Chinese.
Those surveyed were students at SMU and the Northen Illinois University in the United States. They were surveyed on their attitudes towards marriage, children and preferences when it comes to choosing a partner.
"I think it is reasonable," said 22-year-old undergraduate from National Technological University, Valerie Fong.
"Social status is parallel to money, and having that is like a validation from other people. It makes you feel good because others will approve of you. That and social comparison too, I guess."
"It is not a must but if you happen to chance upon one, why not? If you get a choice, you can certainly place yourself in an environment," she added.
"I guess that's true when you're looking for a husband, financial stability is definitely important," agreed Lydia Chan, 27, sales associate.
"But at the end of the day, money is not going to guarantee you a happy marriage unless you're seeking materialistic gains," she warned.
Other women Yahoo! Singapore spoke to were quick to disagree.
"I'm afraid I'm still old fashioned and traditional, but personality and kindness come first for me," shared Sharon Lim, 23, HR officer.
Said Deborah Tan, 23, an undergraduate, "I don't think the study reflects female students as a whole and it is unfair if it does. I think we have moved past materialism. To me, it does not have any meaning other than superficiality and shallowness which is what girls don't want to be associated with."
Lim Yan Han, 22, also agreed that the results are not representative.
"This is not something new," said the final-year National University of Singapore psychology student. "The findings back up the evolution theory that says men look for attractive women while women look for successful men."
"But what's the use of having a spouse who's a high flyer at work but doesn't communicate with you and instead, cares only about himself or his work?"
Professor Li's research found no major differences when it comes to men's preferences, however. His findings showed that looks remain the most important trait in a spouse for both Singaporean and American men, before kindness and a lively personality.
"Men are wired to go for looks," he explained, adding that a woman's physical attractiveness is a visual cue for fertility. Features such as "soft skin, full-looking lips and colourful cheeks" are not just attractive, but also associated with youth, which indicates a woman's fertility. That is why men tend to go for younger women, he added.

The new Prius is 1.8 and saves more fuel than Civic Hybrid for city and highway driving. Wah, you managed SG-Simpang Pulai in 3/4 tank... you must have been driving less than 120km/hr. When i tried that once, i managed to hit 700+km for a full tank.... 17km/l

And here is a story about Malaysian women!!!:*::*:
M'sian man wants divorce because he is sex-starved
By News Desk in Petaling Jaya/The Star | ANN – Tue, Jun 14, 2011
Petaling Jaya (The Star/ANN) - A Malaysian man wants a divorce after claiming that his 37-year-old wife is sexually frigid and that they had sex less than 20 times in 10 years of marriage, reported Malaysian newspaper China Press.
The man, who declined to be named, said they had sex for the first time two years after their marriage.
"She always finds an excuse to reject me. I did consider her feelings in the beginning.
"But now, I need sex so I am having an affair," he said, adding that the couple had been sleeping in separate rooms for the last three years.
He promised to take care of her and their three children aged between 21 months and seven years after the divorce.
However, the wife, who held a press conference at Federal Territory Gerakan in Kuala Lumpur, claimed the man wanted a divorce in order to marry his Chinese national girlfriend, whom he met online two years ago.
The woman, who is a sales coordinator, said she found out about her husband's affair after giving birth to her youngest son.
"He was having an affair with a local woman then. But I chose to forgive him after he terminated the relationship with the woman," she said, adding that he then had an affair with the Chinese national.
She said she was willing to divorce him on condition that he continued to pay the children's education fees and living expenses as well as the house and car loans.

I did calculate for the same car in MY & SG, it's cheaper to drive a MY car for the first 4-6 years (depending on how much you drive) before the $20/day makes it more expensive to drive a MY car into SG... my calculation included cheaper MY roadtax (only RM450 for a 2.0l car), lower insurance and maintenance cost and of course MY petrol... for the long-term (>5 yrs), cheaper to drive a SG car in SG.

The "LANPA" GUIDE TO JB's Health Centres (aka Massage Parlours aka Brothels) For those of you who are not familiar with Johore Bahru town, I have just added a Map of the salient areas. I hope you find this new feature useful in your quest for new "treasures" at bargain prices. (Map courtesy of the great Lanpa -posted in my Delphi Forum on 20 July 99) This is my little contribution to Sam's forum. The Lanpa Guide to is intended to provide information for those seeking to check out the Health Centres in Johore Bahru. For those with the adventurous spirit and have the time and means to venture across the causeway, the services available there are often value for money. PART 1 will deal with basic questions on prices and SOP so as to make life easier for those unfamiliar to the JB HC scene. This thread will also cover site reviews some of the popular locations. PART 2 will cover feedback on the gals and be posted under the "Field Reports" folder. I must confessed that I have not the time and means to check out ALL the HCs found in JB nor do I go JB ALL the time, any updates or postings on places not covered here will be most welcome :) 1.Charges for sauna and massage r abt RM 66 to 93 (40-45 mins) ....... for extended session of 1 hr, abt +RM 14-20 extra ...................................... for HJ abt +RM 80 to 100 ...................................... for BJ abt +RM 100 to 150 ...................................... for FJ abt +RM 150 A full package with sauna and FJ will therefore cost abt RM 230 or just over S$100 2.For those in a hurry, u may opt out of the sauna and go straight into the room. This may save u abt RM 20. Please ask at the reception to be sure. 3.For those sited in a hotel, some offer the privacy of the guest rooms. This may cost abt RM 20-30 more. HCs at Grand Continental and Blue Wave Hotels hav this option. Hyatt is supposed to hav a RM 280 hotel suite package. HOW TO GO ABOUT IT? (SOP) 4.The procedures r similiar to sillypore's HCs but more like the up-market ones. a) At the reception, u usually don't have to book the gals there. A safe-deposit box service is often provided -use it! Keep your passport and wallet there. Don't worry about payment, u only need to pay when u leave. The best part is that credit cards r always accepted for the whatever services u enjoyed. Unless your wife likes to read your visa bill. In that case, come with sufficient ringgits--the exchange rate sucks. b) At the TV lounge, after the sauna, shower and free nasi lemak, the staff will automatically approach u . This is when u state your request. If u can't get any of the gals u wanted, ask for his recommendation. Be specific about your preferences, like age, height, body, skills, etc. Looks, however, are very subjective. They will say all r beautiful, but be realistic in your expectation. c) Once in the room ....... well, relax and enjoy! 5. Tipping --no need to tip the gals; they probably earn more than most of us. --those captains or guys who intro the gals u may ask u for tips... abt RM 10 will do? and only if u r happy. So far only noticed those at Crystal Crown actively asked for tips. PRACTICE SAFE SEX Even if they offer to do BJ/FJ w/o cap, plse play safe....it's more risky than GL: Even if her looks make your jaws drop, Please remember to use the rubber; Even if it's only for a blowjob, You have to protect your brother ! * Coming up next: reviews of the various health centres...... This section will give details on the some of the more popular HCs in Johor Bahru. It is not meant to be comprehensive. Any additons or updates r welcome.

If this is a big issue, then Malaysia will have many many more issues on a daily basis. Actually if I am not wrong, our inmates also need to strip naked and do squats.. even though the latter part I am still verifying but I know for sure u have to turn around with back facing the prison warden and open up your asshole to show them that you are not hiding anything. First hand account from friends and prison warden friends.

Hi then u better dont apply for PR or SG citizenship yet ... make sure u settle your car issue.. cos if u get a JB car and drive to SG on a daily basis, u for sure need to pay $400 a month on VEP ( mon-fri ) but for petrol, road tax and insurance etc.. u pay ringgit, which is already very much difference.. For insurance, normally a guy pays S$2000 in Singapore but in Malaysia it is average about S$1000 only. For road tax of course the difference is there too!
For Civic 1.3l, is the power the same as 2.0? Thats what I heard previously. Actually I am now exploring a diesel car.. just that the diesel tax is a headache.. For diesel cars I dont have to pump every 2-3 days.. perhaps once every 1-2 week and its just RM 1.80
Narmi, you're right. Singaporean or SPR cannot drive a MY car into Singapore. I am neither... yet

Hey where can I buy this 12V electrical fuel pump? I make sure I transfer the fuels from my wife's car to mine every week
Dont think is a major problem for the malaysians , these ppl at least got another malaysia car back home . Just get a 12V electrical fuel pump to tranfer from their malaysia car. But kind of troublesome , thats all .

Haha I think we are the small group of people whose petrol bills exceed RM 1,000. We should explore other alternatives like diesel cars etc.. Hybrid wise last time i heard that the mileage is nt really that true.. that means for honda insight they claim its 30km per litre but in real life is no more than 20km per litre..
Finally i am forced to consider hybrid at my next car change...

Hi Euphony anda Cathy,
I gota support her 4 other "big children" of which one is married out.. and not only that, the one which is married out will bring her hubby and two kids along during makan sessions every week.. imagine u marry out one daughter and think your financial burden is lesser but she brings back THREE more dependents.. how would u feel if u are the father and had to feed soooo many mouths? Somemore they dont have any intentions to help subsidise the bills a bit.. not even RM 10! And over the years, I reckon we have spent more than RM 10k alone just on makan for them..
I have been giving my wife allowance of up to S$500 a month but I found that this is not the way as secretly when I am not in JB most of the time, she will bring her "dependents" out for meals, which cost RM 100-RM 500 for one meal as the family is damn HUGE.
aiyoh must ask her to do the sums. you have to support your own children right? now need to support another 2 big 'children'??

Wow bluewave, no idea on this. Next thing we know, new thread, sleezing or chionging in JB.
Actually, if one stays near those NGV gas station or able to pass through them on daily travel, might as well convert car to be able to use NGV. Its a bit far out though but there are some that may be near to your place.
Hmm, (note to self) most of my cars have big bootspace so can sacrifice to put NGV, NGV.... Hmmm

Buy from any autopart shop in JB can liao , just ask for a Proton fuel pump should work . You need to get a few meters of fuel line , and wires to connect to you ciggi socket . Have not try out this , not too sure if this setup work without priming the pump ?

Bro HH, you need to put a stop to this, if worse come to worse, cut the allowance or talk to her and let her understand. Thing with dealing with ladies is to use emotions rather than logic. As MCP/sexist as this sounds, sometimes even this silly joke has some truth in it:

That has not happened for a while, hmmm since the Wuchang uprising?
If you are reading this, i was just referring to a friends wife, none

no where near... when moving off from stop, especially when in loaded condition, its about same as a 1.8 or slightly more. But at high speed, its a 1.3 for sure.

Hi, I would like to ask the brothers here how long do you need to get through the causeway during peak hour? If you reach the causeway at 730am, when can you get through the 2 customs?
Please advice... I am contemplating my options and need to find out more...

Oh yes! I'm going to take a look this Friday. Fairway suite sounds good. Setia' sky too close proximity to malls. Can be very noisy at times especially cars revving in n out.
Vested... so, highly recommend to check out HH Fairway Suites if you are looking for what you had mentioned... plus me thinks security considerations and future cap appreciation there should be better compared to others.

Finger scans: Call in JB to exempt Singaporeans
By Carolyn Hong, Malaysia Bureau Chief In Kuala Lumpu
KUALA LUMPUR - TWO associations representing businesses in Johor have urged the Malaysian government to exempt Singaporeans from the biometric screening system, after suffering losses from the recent congestion.
The two organisations, representing Chinese and Indian businesses, plan to send a memorandum soon to Johor Menteri Besar Ghani Othman and the Home Ministry to plead their case.
According to the president of Johor Baru Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Loh Liam Hiang, the jams caused at the entry points by the fingerprinting of every visitor had begun to deter Singaporeans from visiting the state.
'They just turn back when they see the queue, especially during the weekends or holidays which see congestion even without the new biometric system,' he said.
Many of Johor Baru's businesses, he noted, depend on Singaporeans, especially the weekend day-trippers who cross over to visit restaurants, food courts, shops and entertainment centres. According to complaints received by the association, business has fallen by 30 per cent to 50 per cent in some shops since the biometric system started on June 1.
Mr Loh added that it would also inconvenience Singaporeans who travel frequently to their factories in Johor. His concerns were borne out by several Singaporeans interviewed by The Straits Times.

Used to cheong in Spore 10-12 years ago when service was exemplary.
Then came the china mei meis with which service standards dropped.
So i started to cheong overseas where got value for $.
JB i just start only. Dunno much about JB. But i am sure almost all the guys in this forum know and are doing it. Most pretend blur or dun wanna admit....
But good you say you cheong. You atleast dun have the "i am saint you are devil" approach.... That is the correct thing to do.
Most others act like saints.... But given a choice.... most men will eat outside......
Yday i was watching a show....The guy was accused in court of sleeping around (actually rape....) So the wife asked him what was lacking in her since she was young, pretty and sexy.... She said what would people think of her and him? He replied saying that ..... Women cook at home.... men eat at home.... men eat outside too.... Why? Cause they are hungry..... so same logic....
How to change my nick you know? Can help?
JB cheong is more value for $ than Spore
