29 August 2008 Armed Robber Nabbed by Public Spirited Duo

Police would like to commend two members of public who assisted to detain a robber who held a cutter to the throat of a female victim, then took off with her handphone, on the afternoon of 28 August 2008 at the void deck of Blk 11 Toh Yi Drive.

On 28 August 2008 at about 4pm, a 20 year-old female Chinese student was studying at a stone table at Blk 11 when a male subject covered her mouth from behind with his hand, placed a cutter on her throat, then grabbed her mobile phone (valued at about $450/-) that was placed on the table. The suspect fled towards Jalan Jurong Kechil, and subsequently onto Upper Bukit Timah Road , with the victim in hot pursuit.

On reaching a petrol kiosk along Upper Bukit Timah Road , the victim sought the assistance of 20-year-old Mr Chen, who happened to be in the area. Mr Chen took up the chase after lending his mobile phone to the victim to call the Police. Along the way, another member of public, 45-year-old Mr Tay joined in the chase.

At the junction of Upper Bukit Timah and Clementi Road , the suspect hailed a taxi in an attempt to get away. However, before he could get into the taxi, Mr Chen and Mr Tay caught up and held on to him. Police resources arrived shortly to take custody of the suspect. Fortunately, no one was injured in the process and the victim's mobile phone was successfully recovered.

The suspect, an unemployed Chinese man, will be charged in Court 26 on 30 August 2008 at 9am with an offence of armed robbery. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to ten years and not less than 12 strokes of the cane.

Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ng Yeow Boon, commended the two public-spirited men for their help in the case. DAC Ng said, "It is a testimony to their selflessness and great community spirit in responding to the victim’s cry for help that resulted in the arrest."
