A HUSBAND and wife were initially arrested for stealing money from a temple's donation box. But when probed at a police station, the larger offence of drug consumption was discovered. On Thursday, the repeat drug abusers were sentenced to seven years for consuming Subutex and two months for the theft. The 36-year-old husband, Gunasegaran, will also be caned six times.

He and his wife Rajeswary Rajagopal, 33, were helpers at the Sheng Hong Temple in Pandan Gardens when they stole more than $360 from a donation box. They struck five times last November, stealing less than $100 on four occasions and $180 on Nov 21. CCTV footage showed Gunasegaran sweeping the floor near the box and stealing the money when he was alone. He gave part of the money to his wife. The couple's misdeeds were uncovered on Dec 2 and they were taken to Clementi Police Division headquarters. There they were arrested on suspicion of consuming drugs.

Subsequent urine tests tested positive for the drug meant to wean addicts off heroin. Gunasegaran admitted to taking the drug a week before the arrest, after obtaining it from a man in Teck Whye. He also gave the drug to his wife. The couple had commited a number of drug related crimes since the 90s. Gunasegaran was jailed for five years and caned four times for consuming morphine in 2001. His wife was also jailed for five years for taking the same drug.
