THE congregation at New Creation Church raised a whopping $19 million for the construction of its new premises at Buona Vista - in less than 24 hours.

In a show of support, a record number of 22,000 people turned up for services at the Rock Auditorium at Suntec City Mall three weeks ago.

The donations were collected over four services on Feb 15.

In comparison, amonth-long charity drive by NTUC Income, Project Love, raised about $375,000.

Following the success of its fund-raiser, the New Creation Church announced the amount it raised to its members on Feb 22. However, when contacted, the church declined to comment.

New Creation Church-goer Angelique Lee, 26, a full-time student, said her donation was a form of thanksgiving and appreciation "for all that God has blessed me with".

'Attending church has helped to transform my life and make me a better person over time,' she explained.

Graduate student Huang Wei Hsuan, 26, who is not a member of the church, felt that part of the funds could be used to "help those who are really in need, instead of being fully used to construct a new building".

'Is it really a good idea to build a new building now? Should the church members be advised to keep more for rainy days?' he asked. But many others who are not from the church were heartened by the congregation's generosity.

'I feel it's incredible that such kindness, empathy and generosity can be shown in such bad economic times,' said Mr Shawn Chin, 24, a civil servant.

Usually churches urge their members to contribute 10% of their monthly income, according to some Old Testament's practice, for the church ministry to forward God's Words further and for the Pastor's Merc...

It is not an Old Testament's practice. to set the picture right!..pastor's use to come to preach in a bucycle..but times have changed MONK's travel in a Ma CEE DEE..why not a pastor..who come in a BMW. As long as pastor, can account for his car etc., only God knows, where they earn their keeps!

God only know if they are in MONKey's business, they themselves have to account to God for their actions!

FYI, they become pastors not pauper,,,, who says pastors cannot have nice cars? If you look as a calling, well, the pastor is for rich people and to mix with the rich you need accessories,,,,, If you look at it as a profession, well, it is just to blend in,,,,

In US they have their own radio station, private plane, own cable,,,,,,

also $19mil is not that much la,,,,, 19,000,000/22,000,,,, only 800+ per head,,, no big deal,,,,

the $19m raised is just a small 6.7% compare to the actual figure, and this amount of 280m are all coming from the followers.

And why do a church needs a business arm in the 1st place?

Ms Lee has the brain the size of a pea and she really should get a life. Maybe she should get laid by the pastor too, since her life has been transformed so much by the church.

It better then doing all the RENCI SHOW , President star charity ........! Do so much stunt and the donation collected must share with media corp , must share with Singtel ...... In the end , collect back a few miserable millions !
