Explaining why he imposed a jail term of one year on the former detective, Justice Kan Ting Chiu said Lim, a staff sergeant with the Criminal Investigation Department at the time of the offences three years ago, abused his maid because of 'deep-seated resentment' towards her. The resentment appears evident in the the fact that at that time he had wanted to dismiss the 23-year-old Indonesian but was talked out of it by his wife.

Lim, 36, was convicted of hitting the maid's head and kicking her in the abdomen, chest and hips on various occasions during a period of 13 weeks. He was also accused of raping her but was acquitted of that charge. Justice Kan noted that each time Lim assaulted the maid, it was because she was simply careless or forgetful - 'minor innocuous mistakes'. For example, Lim attacked her for forgetting to pack his child's clothings on an outing, not holding onto the child during a bath and using the wrong teat on a milk bottle. Justice Kan said the abuse was 'not spontaneous lapses of self-control'. 'They were the vengeful reaction to the maid's continued presence in his house. I do not see how it can be said that he had 'unwittingly' allowed this anger and frustration to get the better of him,' he said. 'The clear evidence is that he deliberately assaulted the maid, not once, but on repeated occasions. He allowed himself to vent his dislike of her by violence, and made no effort to check himself.' The maid, described as timid and submissive, had worked for the Lims for more than a year at that time and was tasked to look after their infant daughter.

this is not the first incidence here and also happening in other countries. why not to create a simple system that the maid should report their working condition and whether they are abused every week, to prevent the problem to be deepened? this can help the maid and also the employer, of whom many of them i believe are good performers at their respective work field.
