How so?

The prostitute sell their body, their neh neh, their pussy for money. Anyone pay the right price could poke, enter, explore her vagina.

Singapore, we sell our Asian language and culture away, just in order to stay competitive.

Isn't that worse than the prostitute? The pros sell body, but Singaporean sell their language and culture, tradition, all in the name of staying competitive? Being global?

If a nation, the language and culture is for sale, then what else is not for sale?? If Asian language demote to 2nd language, all because of monetary gain, materialistic advantage,

then what else is not for sale???

Sorry for asking but what exactly is "our Asian Language and Culture" in the Singapore context??

I thought Singaporeans spoke Dialects, Mandarin, Malay, Tamil etc... none of which belong to Singapore in the first place and the Singapore Culture is a mixture of the culture of the various ethnic groups which have inhabited the Island for more than a century.

Adding more Chinese and Indians isn't going to change anything. It's just more of the same.

The only ethinc group which should be complaining are the Malays who have been given no consideration whatsoever.

English can't possibly be the native language of Singapore. The native language is Malay. It's what the country spoke before all the foreigners arrived.

Put it this way.

97 percent of the population in Spore are Asian. When the country 'promote' English as 1st language, and 'demote' Asian language as 2nd language, something is seriously wrong with this country.

Its like 97 percent of the whole country starting out using mac and all kind of linux os, but the PAP govt impose a policy forcing the whole country to use Windows XP, Windows Vista as the default OS. doesn't sound right to me.

the sum is not right. 97 percent of the population are asian, and we put some so much emphasis on english language. thats a sell out to the asian language and culture.

someone should tell this straight in the face to LKY.
- I rather be a poorer man than sell away my chinese language and culture like a prostitute.

The only language Singapore has ever put a lot of emphasis on is Mandarin.

English is hardly a prerequisite for being a sinkie. For example, New PRC citizens are under no compulsion whatsoever to learn English.

Where on earth did you get the idea that English is promoted as a "1st language"??

If Singlish is our Asian language and culture then I don't mind them selling it away

in the school, english is label as 1st language, and asian language such as chinese, malay, tamil are 2nd language.

when one is speaking singlish, he/ she is in fact speaking mandarin, or chinese dialect in english.

now, is that asian language? i don't know.

watever it is, it is inefficient. why not speak directly in mandarin or chinese dialect? why add one more layer??

That's because ALL races attend the same schools and a common language is therefore needed so that everyone in Singapore can communicate with each other. If English isn't used, what do you suggest as an alternative?

Should Singapore go down the same route that Malaysia has taken and insist that all schools teach in the native language which is Malay.

After all, Malay IS the National language of Singapore.

let me use this analogy. 97 percent of the population are asian. they eat rice, and asian cuisine. so why force them to eat potatoes and western food so that there's unifying food menu for all different asian?

u are talking about the uno, one, language as the official language? why not four language like it should be, instead of pretending to be four official language but overly emphasize on english language?

lets visualize this. in a kampong far far away...

75 villagers love eat fried hokkien prawn mee.

13 villagers love to eat nasi lemak.

8 villagers love to eat prata.

then a smart aleck young fascist, the chief of the village name harry hakka dracula (hhd). he said, all eat potatoes salad. so that there's a unifying menu. so that there's less chaos. so tat no quarrel over lunch time...

but noboy is quarrelling. people just love their cuisine. so why harry hakka dracula wanna force them to eat potatoes salad? the answer...

the chief harry hakka dracula hate asian cuisine. he love potatoes salad. and he want villagers to follow his way and no other way is allowed.

and the rest is history.

The laws of Singapore are written in English. If the PRC or other immigrants don't want to learn English, it's their problem.

In Singapore school exams, you may pass or score 'A's for as many subjects as you can, but fail English, and you failed the whole exam.

That said, both English and Chinese examination standards in Singapore schoold are laughably low. You can pass 'O' Level English by knowing about 20 (out of 26) letters of the alphabet and Chinese by knowing about 200 (out of about 4,000 as required in the PRC and Taiwan, 2,000 in Japan) characters.

The reason why English was chosen as the "neutral" language which all ethnic groups could use to interact with each other is because the language already enjoyed a solid foundation. (thanks to Singapore's colonial history).

Take English away and some other language will have to be chosen as the common language for communication between the ethnic Chinese, Indians, Malays and "others". The chosen language will have to be implemented in schools so that the foundation is built from an early age when language skills are at their peak.

Which language do you propose?

Ah yes. And China, as the big Brother should tell every investor, you want to set up factories here, use only chinese language or go somewhere else. She will redeem for us, our honour. And that she will work towards making chinese the dominant lingua franca of the world. Ah yes. No more need to learn a second language.

language is not neutral. u use more of one language and ignoring the rest, u would influence by the medium of that language. u use more and more of english, u would read, write, think in that language more often. and u turn into a ang moh wannabe.

i had stated previous message, i suggest we stay true to four official languages like those glossy image we singapore project to the world, instead of pretending to be 4 official language, but actually, overly emphasis on ang moh language english.

the question is not about what ONE official language it should be. the question is WHO WE WANNA BE? Asian or Ang Moh wannabe?
