Fine, ban for cyclist's death <!--10 min-->

</td></tr> </tbody></table><!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--> A BUS driver was fined $8,000 and banned from driving for four years on Tuesday for causing the death of a cyclist at a traffic light junction.
Toh Hock Tian, 62, pleaded guilty last November to causing the death of China construction worker Li Shi Qiang, 40, by doing a negligent act at the junction of Choa Chu Kang Way and Choa Chu Kang North 7 on Oct 3, 2007.
He was driving a TIB bus on the extreme left of the four-lane Choa Chu Kang Way when he failed to keep a proper lookout in front and hit Mr Li who was cycling on the pedestrian crossing from right to left. On impact, the cyclist was flung upwards and his head hit against the front right windscreen of the bus.
The cyclist and his bicycle were dragged some distance before the bus came to a halt. Mr Li died seven hours later in hospital of head injuries.
Mr Raj Singh Shergill said Toh's view of the cyclist had been blocked by vehicles on his right. The collision was due to a momentary lapse in attention or judgment on Toh's part, and contributed by the cyclist who had beaten the lights.
Toh, who has a clean driving record for 35 years including 13 years as a bus driver, has since stopped driving, he said. He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
