<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->SINGAPORE and India have signed a bilateral agreement to hold joint army training and exercises in India.
Singapore's Permanent Secretary of Defence, Mr Chiang Chie Foo and his Indian counterpart Defence Secretary Mr Vijay Singh, inked the pact on Tuesday at the Indian Ministry of Defence in New Delhi.
Mr Chiang, who is in India on an official visit from Monday to Wednesday, also called on the Indian Defence Minister Mr A K Antony, and met the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta and the Chief of the Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor.
This is the second bilateral agreement between Singapore and India, said a Ministry of Defence statement on Wednesday.
Last October, Mr Chiang and Mr Singh signed the Bilateral Agreement for the Conduct of Joint Military Training and Exercises in India between the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Since the inaugural bilateral army exercise in April 2005, the two armies have conducted annual bilateral armour and artillery exercises, the most recent being an armour exercise in Babina in May. The next artillery exercise is scheduled to be held in Devlali in November. Besides the bilateral army exercises, the RSAF and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) also exercise regularly with their Indian counterparts. In addition, both defence establishments interact regularly through policy dialogues, visits and courses.
