WHEN a manager was told he could be re-hired after retirement but as a lower-rank executive in the same department, he baulked at the idea.
Changing such thinking is part of the challenge of putting in place re-employment practices, said Mrs Olivia Tay, who handles human resource for the National Healthcare Group.
She presented her company's efforts in this area, at the launch on Wednesday of a website that serves as a one-stop information service for bosses and employees on the re-employment of older workers.
The website aims to help employers get started with putting re-hiring practices in place before a law comes into effect in 2012. That law will require them to offer jobs to workers who reach the retirement age of 62.
Workers can also find out about what re-employment entails from the website, www.re-employment.sg.
Case studies of companies that have adopted such practices, as well as age profiles of the workforce of more than 250 companies, can be found on the website.
Mr Alexander Melchers, chairman of the Tripartite Implementation Workgroup on the employability of older workers, said at the launch of the website that response to re-employment has been good among employers. 'Where before, many people were not familiar with what re-employment was all about, today, employers are now focused on how best they can get started on implementing re-employment,' he said.

This is terrible. One week after Dr M said that Malaysia is no longer a low cost country and the employers must raise wages, our leaders want to defy economic reality and ask for lower wages here?

What the heck. Are we that backward that we have to compete on cost alone?

When the time comes for the decision makers of this move to settle for less, upon reaching the age range in mention, I'd really like to see the expressions on their faces, when they realise 2 decimals less to the figures on their pay-checks. (Although I believe is still very much more than the average Singaporean)

I wonder if the emperor would be convulging, when revelation comes that he has to settle for a meger SGD2k/mth salary (with standard 20% CPF deduction, minimal medical benefits, no transport allowance, no transport claims etc) holding a job of document despatch person.

What LKY wants is power and influence.

He can definitely make a lot lot lot more if he is in the private sector.

If they only busk in the limelight, go on with their comfortable living, without having to sweat a day in their lives to understand what kind of life an avg Singaporean leads, they'd never understand how detrimental or damaging some of their reforms have done.

In other words, instead of the ministers going about putting on pretense to clean the neighbourhoods, going around shaking hands & craddling singaporean babies come election phase. The showmanship to me is just revolting, and tyring to win the shallow minds. They should be considering doing all that on a regular basis.
