Man hangs himself out of guilt over loss of friends' work permits

He persuaded five colleagues to join him to moonlight in October last year but all five ended up as victims of a scam.

In the process, they lost their work permits, and blamed Roni Miya Rajaul Karim, 20, for their predicament.

Roni Miya was also afraid he would be sent back to Bangladesh.

On Oct 27, he hanged himself in his room at the Kaki Bukit Hostel.

At the coroner inquiry on Wednesday, State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid said that the foreigner probably killed himself out of guilt over his friends' losing their work permits because of him.

A Bangladeshi worker killed himself after falling for a scam.

According to The Straits Times, Roni Miya Rajaul Karim, 20, had been working as a painter in Singapore for only six months before he was roped into a scam by an acquaintance, Pabal.

Pabal had offered Roni a part-time job and told him to recruit five other friends. Roni complied and met Pabal the next day, passing Pabal a total of six work permits, including his own.

After that, Pabal allegedly fled with the work permits and became uncontactable. The worried Roni found that he could not report to work as a permit is required to enter the site he was working at, Anchor Point condominium.

Hoping to get a new work permit, Roni called both his elder brother and his foreman for help as he did not want to be sent home to Bangladesh. Roni later failed to report to work and was found to have hung himself in his Kaki Bukit Hostel at 5.30pm on 27 October last year.

The state coroner believes that Roni hung himself out of the guilt for losing his friends’ work permits. The executive director of the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics, Jolovan Wham, is concerned over the welfare of migrant workers.

He said, “We don’t have the equivalent of family service centres for migrant workers. So if they have problems, they don’t have counsellors to talk to.” He explained that in smaller companies, “their human resource officers only deal with administrative matters and would blame the workers if there are problems".

Finally, he hopes that more counselling centres can be set up to cater to migrant workers.
