In a certain part of gelang path are lots of durian trees and if one is so inclined, one can even go there around 6am to pick up some during the durian season. There are actually places in Perling market that sells as well as one enroute to Sutera mall using the road from Nusa Bestari. Do choose to eat there if they have such tables as you can complain straightaway if the fruits are bad. Found a place that sells live chicken and fruits, near the Gelang path factories and industrial area

Pelangi there is a famous 'Bak Kut Teh' which supposedly all the mini celebrities frequent.....i have seen taiwanese 'big white shark' and local Tan Kim Lang eating there....but i dun fancy it as its the herbal version.

Lao pak sat hawker centre at Jalan Ah fook. Moved to a carpark in front of indian temple at night. Not sure still there or not. Opposite got a JB laksa shop, corner shop. across in of the alley way there is a wanton noddle shop. Not sure if all still exist to this day or not. I haven't to JB longer then I've been back to Johor. Oh there is a nice nasi lemak/otah place near Pelangi I think. Opposite some old abandoned mall. Any bro here still know if these food place still exist?

Near Sutera mall, there is one Bak Kut Teh near the Suan Bee Hotel, opens until 2am.
There is another bak kut teh behind this row, not bad too. The wanton mee also in the row behind(near Kingston hotel)
is delicious especially the fried wanton :)

I tried out 2 Bak Kut Teh stalls . One is in a coffeeshop directly opposite KSL Mall. The Bak Kut is not tender enough though tastes ok. Not that cheap either. But the Pig Trotters is very well done and cheap :) Place is well patronised by locals.

Another one is the stall beside Old Town Coffee along Bestari. This one is better in taste and the soup is really peppery. About 9 RM per bowl.

Can bros here recommend good place to go (near bukit indah) for Chinese New Year Eve reunion dinner?

I have just asked the Pekin restaurant at Sutera mall, and found all their tables for the 5pm and 8pm time slots are completely booked. Only the ones at 1pm slot are available for booking but that would be too early for reunion "Dinner".

Any recommendations?

You can try the new Chinese restaurant located in the orange boxy building opposite Bukit Indah Jusco. Just next to Hotal Granada and McDonald. The name is Shi Li Fang. I have not tried before, but the place looks classy from the facebook photos, should be in the same league as Pekin restaurant at Sutera mall.

Johor Jaya - "The Toast" is not bad and seems popular with the locals. The fried mee siam with fried chicken is gd, but portions too small also! Problem is Johor Jaya is always v crowded n parking is a problem...

Oh, n there's a German Bistro in that Daiman bowling centre. The pork knuckle is nice but its really too huge for one! Hee...

Habib at Skudai, has a decent taste...

Though it is an open food court sort of a setup, with seats inside and outside in teh open as well.
It has a very long list of Items/variety in its menu. But very limited for vegetarian servings.... We had Veg Mee Goreng + Veg Dosai + Fresh Fruit Juices... all was good,

The other place we ate was at Pizza Hut at Jusco... crowded though!

Hi Winners, thanks for compliment. Yes, I have tried the no name stall - it is good ;D
http://johorkaki.blogspot.com/2012/01/fish-soup-road-side-stall-off-jalan.html I will be most appreciative if you could also recommend other eateries that you like ;D

Hi JohorKaki,

Wonder if you have tried the curry laksa in the coffee shop along Jalan Harimau Tarom (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1.481959,103.764565&num=1&t=m&z=18). Forgot the name of the coffee shop, but it's just next to the PANASHOP (selling all PANASONIC appliances) and you won't miss it if you go slow. Usually, their RM5 curry laksa is sold out by about 2.30pm on weekdays. Their curry is very lemak in taste.

For curry puff, I would like to recommend June's Curry Puff (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1.482758,103.775481&num=1&t=m&z=18) inside the coffee shop at 53 Jalan Kuning (Taman Pelangi). They will usually sell out by 3.30pm. At RM1.20 each, buy 10 get 1 free.

There is also the JUSTART (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1.481723,103.774714&num=1&t=m&z=18) shop at 48 Jalan Perang, also in Taman Pelangi. They sell nothing but all kinds of Tarts. Their regular egg tart at RM1.60 each tastes delicious. They also have a branch at #B1-K26 in Bugis Junction. It closes at 7pm.

Finally, I would also recommend the Yardley Pastry (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1.479031,103.774398&num=1&t=m&z=18) at 161 Jalan Sri Pelangi. Their pastries and cake rolls are fresh and tasty albeit a little high in price. Operating hours from 9.30am to 7pm, closed on Wednesdays. They also have a website: http://yardleypastry.blogspot.com

That's all for now.

Very nice stuffed chicken. The mashed potato also shiok.
Price on high side but can go for their set lunch around Rm 25 - 28 ++ (even during weekends). :p

Thanks bro wuqi256. It would be great if there are members who knows their durians and where they can be found which in their opinion are durians of good quality and value for money. Durians can be found everywhere, but there are some places and vendors that should be avoided for cheating or some other reasons.

I am still exploring good durian stalls. But I don't think quality and price can be consistent season after season for any durian stall.

We need to be updated on the most current feasting experience for the current season.

"Chopper" stalls (chop carrot or cheat on the weight etc) are the ones that probably need to be alerted.

Wuqi, do u have any idea where i could get pure honey? I prefer fm bee farms (plantation) cos those sold at supermart already "commercialise". I am sure its not 100% pure honey.

Years back used to patronise this pak chik plantation...somewhere near Kukup area.:oPlantation deep in and off the main road. Tat Pak chik prepared the honey on the spot ie. we can see remnants like leaves mixed with the honey. I bought 30 bottle...sekali goooos..Tats what I called 100% honey.:)

Thanks for the up bro. Don't buy the commercialized ones as most of the cheap brands are from China. Even those from elsewhere are not real honey and some are sweetened sugar. I read this in SBF forum sometime ago when someone posted the link. Yes, those from the bee farms you bought will be genuine honey.

This Pak chik very humble. Maybe simple minded. Not so "commercialise minded". But i always believe never take advantage of such people. Chinese called kama rite? ONe good turn deserves another. He only charges me M$18 per bottle i.e. @ 600ml. Pure HOney! But its like 11 yrs back....

Sure, i am not a durian expert so my apologies i can't help much. Lots of cheats, about the safest way is to tell them you will eat on the site but tell them last min you ta bao. Of course, they would have opened up the durians by now so this is more for immediate consumption or you are able to later pack the durians into containers into the fridge for later consumption. I would rather have cold durians than bad durians. :)

Hi Crystal,

I heard that NI precinct 8 is almost sold out. Someone had placed a reservation fee for the last 5 units a couple of weeks back, if they did not back out and purchase all 5, precinct 8 would be totally sold out.

For precinct 7, I heard there are still some units available but that was a few weeks back.

Btw, any tamans to recommend?

Thanks

Went to 二重丸~~~ near to Sutera Mall. The queue was long. Apparently it was popular with the locals. The place is a little dark and the tables are too close to one another for comfort. One could literally hear the conversations at the next table. The sashimi's portion was small and the ramen's standard is average. Quite a big bowl though. Free green tea but the service is less than desirable.

Think the quality of Japanese food here is still below what I used to eat back home.So for the price I am paying , I will not visit again. :)

Actually I beg to differ. If you can, please show me another cheaper Jap restaurant in SG that serves similar quality Jap food to 二重丸. I have eaten extensively in Singapore's Jap restaurants, and for the price, I find 二重丸 extremely gd value for money. Its roughly 2/3 of what I would pay in Singapore for similar quality.

True true. For those not in the know, I feel it is better than Sakae Sushi but probably similar to Ichiban & Sushi Tei in terms of quality (but cheaper). In fact, I feel its slightly better than Ichiban & Sushi Tei.

Found another cluster of seaside seafood restaurants at Kampung Teluk Jawa. The restaurants looks generally quite big and organized. I probably tried one of the restaurants more than 10 years ago during a company organized trip but I could not remember how the taste was like. I just remembered I was a bit impressed by its reclusiveness. It is quite easy to get there now using the coastal highway to the east.

Nice, was it good? I love wu xiang. We always visit this this Taiwanese porridge place, Gu Zao Ren (non-Halal)
near Sutera Mall, opens until 12 midnight. Free flow of plain porridge or with sweet potato after the first order
plus free desert and we always order the following: Wu Xiang (a form of meat roll with pork), beansprouts with
salted fish, chye poh/da chong omelette (radish/onion omelette), tang dynasty bacon (bacon, chinese style)

We always get a pot of Qiu Wang (chinese tea) with it. Very nice for us. My dad and mum likes the place as well.

My mother still makes the best Wu Xiang, period. No other place is close as her Wu Xiang is so good that neighbours and old neighbours come all the way from other parts of the island to get from her. She doesn't sell them but with all the good stuff she packs in, really good. One actually wanted to place an order with my mother but she always refused and gives to them free. She has a really good heart.

near Sutera Mall, opens until 12 midnight.

My dad and mum likes the place as well.

i would say not bad , but for sure , home prepare wu xiang is way much better ....

I think different country people got different taste for food. That day I tried out the Crystal ba kut teh (the one near the causeway) that was recommended in the blog/local newspaper and found the soup very salty.

Agree totally that taste is very subjective :)

I "kee chiu" (Dr JiaJia) on this.

On side note, I like the pig trotters at Crystal. :D

Hi, I tried the bak kut teh at Bukit Indah - 好味吧生肉骨茶 - find that it is pretty good, the best among the few bak kut teh I have tried in JB. Heard from a local that he found the soup too "kat" or thick but okay to me. The shop is in the row behind the new HK street cafe - at the other end of Crystal cafe - facing the Bukit Indah houses.

Good News - No Need to Fill White Cards Anymore :)

Chief Secretary of Malaysia’s Home Ministry, Mohmood Adam, announced on 20 May 2012 that, with effect from 1st Jun 2012, foreigners entering Malaysia need not fill the white arrival cards to enter Malaysia.

This decision was made after consultations between the Home Ministry, Immigration Department, and Tourism ministry.

This should mean quicker clearances at the immigration checkpoints for makan trips 

To go to the New Chua Kee, go back to old Gelang Patah road, drive towards Pontian direction, pass the junction turning into the new Nusantara estate and at the next road junction turn left into those shoplot. It is just after a minimart. It is also inside the Nusantara estate but use this road that turn direct into the shoplot.

The place is usually full on Saturday and Sunday night with many Sgeans as well and on some Tuesday, they are not open for business.

My friend's sister (Malaysian) who lived in Bestari area told me that it is not advisable to use food delivery service to home. This is because it is inviting unnecessary stranger to come close to your house. She said robbery can happen when you are taking the 'food' after opening the gate to let the delivery guy into your house compound. I am not sure how true this is but this came from someone who has been living in JB.

In JB, it is very hard to find coffeeshops with lots of stalls. There is one beside Old Town Coffee along nusa bestari heading towards Sutera side.

You just need to walk/drive along the stretch of shophouses near Giant and you will find not coffeeshops but all kinds of eateries with reasonable prices.

From Chinese, Indian, Malay, vegetarian, Vietnamese, nonya, Korean , Thai - you are spoilt for choice. Enjoy :)

Took family to Crystal Pearl Restaurant in Bukit Indah for dinner tonite. I would not recommend it.
Firstly, I made the mistake of going to the toilet to wash my hands before having my Dinner. BIG MISTAKE...... I leave it to your imagination.....
Then came the food, the plate that the rice came on still had dried on remains that looked as if the plate was not washed!!!!! The Fish Head in the curry looked and tasted as if it was in the freezer for a very long time...... The kid's meal had an egg mayonnaise sandwich which my kids normally eat very heartily. This time around after a couple of bites, they refused eat any more!!! When I tasted it, the mayonnaise in the egg sandwich tasted quite different....... Finally, service....... I quess "I owe them a living" even though I thought I was paying for it......
It might have had a good rating sometime back BUT I guess standard has plummeted......

I went to Taman Molek last weekend. A friend brought me to try this cafe My Liberica. The swiss roll (coffee flavour) is not bad. Its more a lifestyle cafe if you like coffee culture. A few shops away from this cafe there is a steamboat place. Did not try it but there was a large crowd. Unless I went to the wrong side of Taman Molek, the area does not appear as 'hip' as what I read in other parts of this forum. In fact, when we drove back to Sutera Mall area, my friends likened the Sutera area to Bangsar of KL (I never been to Bangsar so dont know how it looks like). They liked the buzz and the higher 'hip' factor. But maybe you will have a different adventure at Taman Molek. And while you are at Taman Molek, can check out SSF. Some of the home stuff are nice and reasonably priced. I also headed to Persada Johor to view the Homedec fair. That area gave me the creeps but managed to get much brochures for home reno.

Overall, in terms of vibrancy, I think Taman Molek currently loses out to Austin and Sutera areas (No Blackball, Overtime, Library etc). However, Berinda is building a "Little Japan' township near the Molek Pines condos.

Perhaps it will be more vibrant when 'Little Japan' and the 2 other shophouse areas are built (1 opp. UOB at Ponderosa and the other 1 opp. Johor Jaya Police Station).

I was at Maco Cafe & Bakery in Sutera yesterday. The mille crepe cakes were sooo good. Made from Hokkaido milk and butter, its rich, creamy and fresh yet do not leave a heavy fill after eating it. I had the caramel coffee cake while my friend had the strawberry cake. Both were good. The biscotti that came with the coffee was thin and crisp and flavourful. Too bad they don't sell them in packs. Iced lemon tea with the right blend of tea flavour, lemon and sugar was one of the better ones I have tried so far. The only gripe I have is the price tag. Cakes were MYR 8.50 a piece, ice lemon tea and coffee MYR 7.50 each, total damage came up to MYR 32. Like the free wifi, cold aircon and high ceilings, especially on a very hot afternoon like yesterday.

Yes you are right, CoCo. :p

The hot sun dazzled my eyes and confused my memory. We were both hungry when we passed by and it was not ready to serve yet. So we went to Lu Bang to try. Not exactly the "Lor" that I like. Dark and 入味 is my preferred. Lu Bang has Duck tongue, feet, neck and one more stewed in this way but we are not fans of them.

i thought the steamboat shop is called COCO ? COCA is singapore one leh ...

Jalan Indah 5/9. Many locals eat at the open space coffee shop. They sell satay, ngor hiong (MYR8.50 for century egg, tao kee, ngor hiong, crab claw and one plate of bee hoon), yong tao fu, cuttlefish kangkong (MYR6), BBQ stingray/sotong/lala (MYR10 for sambal chilli lala), kolo mee, bak kut teh, economy beehoon/rice, fried chicken (just chicken or with rice), chicken rice (white), char kuey teow, or jian, sweet dessert, drinks (home made barley and a can of coke MYR2.90). Opposite road there is a fruits stall (durian MYR20/kg for mao shan wang). Total dinner for two MYR 27.40. Price of food here is close to Singapore, just that its in ringgit :D

Place is along main road (red dot), with gas station (Petronas) on the left.

Me too, landmarks and orientation.

I find Bukit INdah roundabout being rather unique in the nearby area, so it helps in map reading.

I was scouting around for local food for long term coz when I retire there, I cannot spend like a visitor. The only way to stretch my retirement dollar is to eat based on local price. Like if I eat char kuey teow in Singapore for S$3, I should have something similar in JB for MYR4. Eating in JB restaurants are not exactly cheap if I no longer have S$ income. There were some coffee shops along Bestari area (the stretch where Old Town is) that serves local food at local price. Having a local plated car is also one of the considerations for using RON95 petrol at MYR1.90/litre.

Tonto, we share the same considerations as you :)

Restaurants makan only certain days, mostly coffeeshops and home cook food.

I am still exploring and rely on recommendations.

Its a great blog. Most comprehensive one I have seen, similar to Singapore's ieatishootipost. Just need to be a bt careful when you visit the stalls late at night, esp those in the JB city centre.......

I think you will be fine with standard common sense stuff. Its not that scary ar......haha

These include: (1) Looking around for suspicious characters before you go into/out of the car. (2) Not leaving anything visible in the car, especially bags, and packages. (3) Parking your car in well-lighted areas (4) If you can, do invest in a steering wheel lock. Though not fool-proof, it makes it more troublesome for them. (5) For ladies, carrying your handbag towards the inner side of the road, so that the bikers cant just grab them & go.

Johor Kaki's superb blog is your best bet. If you are into Jap food, I find 味彩 (Pelangi row of shophousese behind Plaza Pelangi) not bad. They got lunch set also....

there is a seafood restaurant nearby BI near taman laguna called "hai fan chun" in mandarin. very decent seafood - a bit exp (crab cost RM90 but the portion is hugee) but most dishes are nice. you can enjoy your seabreeze too while u eat - the setup is similar to that at kukup.

hai fan chun is over rated. it use to be a cheap place to have seafood but nowadays it cost the same as sutera peking.

it depends on which one. i went there recently - the one where you drive all the way in till the last bit of the road - the food is cheap but quality sucks. the one (can vaguely recall the restaurant name has a "ling" character), food is quite exp but quality is superb (esp its huge crabs and signature golden bun)

where to find the best Nasi Lemak?

not sure the location - but theres one famous one in taman perling. restaurant called something like "mana lagi" or "satu lagi"

there is even a newspaper article reporting that the chef put black magic or drug in the nasi lemak, that's why people keep coming back for the nasi lemak. sounds outrageous .. but that suggests the stuff is good!

Another one is at "hai fan chun", the place famous for seafood. along the route to the seafood restaurants, you turn in an alley to the nasi lemak stall. A small humble looking stall, but its always full on weekends
