Wine Bottles

I seldom drink wine. Donch know much about it too. But I notice wine bottles are usually corked. That makes it troublesome to open with screw opener. Screw capped bottle was invented long ago. Even hard liquors use screw capped bottles. Why must wine be corked?

to continue to add oak flavor to the wine when bottled. this is more important for red wine than white wine. before wines are bottled, they are stored in oak barrels to age and also to absorb the oak flavor from the barrel. this is the primary reason why france imports oak barrels and corks from california....because northern californian oak infuses more flavor to the wine than french oak....a secret on why napa wine has been winning over french wine in taste tests.

There are tons of quality wines which use screw caps. The Stelvin crew cap is the first choice amongst the up market producers.

Cork ruins up to 10% of all bottled wine as a result of TCA contamination.

Donch know much about California or French wine. Never bought wine before.

Reason I asked is cause last evening I visited a friend's house. He opened a bottle of wine for dinner. Could see him struggling with the corkscrew. In the end the cork came out. But as I drink it could feel cork flake in my tougue. Had to go toilet to spit it out LOL

Here's the most balanced review I could find.

When it comes to drinking reds in Singapore, I've found that the "red wine should be drunk at room temp" rule doesn't apply. It should be chilled to about 18℃. "Room temperature" in the tropics is about 26℃ which is too warm.

These all whisky, not wine LOL Anyway usually I drink beer only. Can is the best. No bottle danger of breaking if slipped. No glass needed to pour and drink. Nothing else needed to open it. Just pop the ring and drink it

You must be a hard drinker drinking all these. Can drive taxi like that?

Before even the cap like beer bottle cap no choice. Beer bottle cap is metal will rust and cannot keep long.
In future I expect wine bottle will change to plastic cap. Some liquor are using plastic cap now, more will follow.

Wine should be stored lying on its side, preferably in a wine cooler. This way the cork is kept wet and not turned brittle when uncorking.

Ya. I seldom drink wine too (for cissies and gay men mostly). I drink beer. Beer us chuggable, not wine.

If I buy wine, more than 12%, less than 25 bucks is good. Better if easy-open bottle.

Cheers!

You are not completely right if I may contribute to here a little. Cork is cork, oak is oak. In the past cork is use to, cork everything as there is no bottle caps rubber stopper etc. So cork has been used traditionally. Oak flavour is induced from oat barrels or in a more modern way oak chips has been used in the case of lots of Aussie wine producers and many new world wine producers. Main cork producing countries are Portugal and Spain. Napa valley produces many great wines and my favourite will be the Matriarch (Bond Estate) which I keep for special occasions. The 04, 05 and 06 bottles are very good.
