Secretary General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Chee Soon Juan, has been awarded the Prize for Freedom 2011 by Liberal International (LI). LI is a world federation of liberal and progressive democratic political parties. It was founded in 1947 "to strengthen liberal protection from totalitarianism, facism and communism", it says on its website. The organisation promotes liberalism, individual freedom, human rights, the rule of law, tolerance, equality of opportunity, social justice, free trade and a market economy.

Each year the Freedom Prize is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of freedom and human rights. Past laureates of the Prize include Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Vaclav Havel, and Mary Robinson.
Chee has had a chequered political career since his first foray into local politics in 1992, when he stood as a candidate for the SDP in the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency by-election. In the years since, he has been at the receiving end of defamation lawsuits from members of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), spent time in jail on several occasions following civil disobedience activities, was bankrupted and is banned from traveling overseas.
He is also disqualified from participating in general elections since his bankruptcy in 2006 from the defamation suit brought by former prime ministers Goh Chok Tong and Lee Kuan Yew. It was over remarks Chee had made during the election campaign that year about an alleged loan to Indonesian President Suharto. Chee lost the lawsuits and was ordered to pay damages of S$300,000 to Goh and S$200,000 to Lee.
Filmmaker Martyn See's documentary film on Chee, called Singapore Rebel, was banned by the authorities in 2005 because, the authorities say, it was a "party political film". It was pulled from April 2005's Singapore International Film Festival line-up after the director was warned he could face two years in jail if the screening went ahead.
The ban was lifted in 2009.
Till date, the short documentary has attracted more than 300,000 views on Youtube.
LI President Hans Van Baalen will be coming to Singapore to present the award to Chee on 3 November 2011 together with officials from the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) of which the SDP is a member.
